It's really not that hard to care for your stuff.

If we're arguing investments... Preventative and proper maintenance and repair, in MOST scenarios, save you time and effort down the road. Read: better ROI.

This is in the aggregate, but I dare someone to argue otherwise..

There is no such thing as a ROI with a car. It is all downhill on a depreciation curve. Pick whatever depreciation curve you like and live with it.

If I have to take care of something that ain't alive, I don't want it.

By the way, this works for lawnmowers and snowblowers as well, rather than pay the annual $125 tune-up cost and the hassle of getting the thing there and back, just buy a new one every ten years, they seem to last that long no matter how much you neglect them. Its the same money regardless.

Why do you keep bringing in fancy fiscal jargon? You brought in investment, which by the way we do continue to invest in fixed assets after purchase to make them ready for use.. that's accounting 101. Let me know if you want to get into the real nitty gritty of depreciation, I am a MACRS specialist and handle fixed assets accounting for a 400 million dollar active fixed asset registry

Point is bud if one invests their time and energy to properly care and maintain their things and connections (assets AND people), they will in the aggregate come out ahead of someone who neglected their things and just used them until they wore out, and bought a new one (or crafted a new relationship).

One could extend this further to explain why our current culture of wed-use-and-divorce rather than invest time and energy into cultivating and maintaining their relationship with their mate is having disasterous effects on the family community as a whole in our country and others exhibiting this behavior..

Here's a tip.. when talking about a problem as a whole, say "one" instead of "your"... you have no idea what my behavior and character is and it's foolish to try and assume that about me.

I love that you're comparing this to a lawnmower and snowblower...

Very well written! I wish I could put that stuff into understandable statements.

In my opinion vehicles can be great investments if you know how to do it right
That is actually how I was able to afford my frs. I went through about 5 different cars before I was able to have enough money to put down on one. Hell we buy cars for $500 then turn around and fix it up and resell it for $1500. That is pure profit (based on our time of course). Also getting into accidents with a car you paid $350 for and having them total it out at $5000 really helps too. But yea vehicles and what not can be good investments for people who are not lazy and that can take the time to keep them running and work on them. Plus in doing that you will become more attached and connected with it. Instead of treating it like toilet paper

But alas I am still bad at taking care of paint.. I am a mechanic, not an artist!

If i find a ding on my car i would bomb the two closest cars near it. Thats my brother's and my sis's.

I don't give a fuck anymore. Tons of stone chips, paint is peeling on my fender, curb rash on a brand new wheel. Battle scars, bros.

It's a 26,000 dollar car. I beat the fuck out of it and don't feel bad.

I do care about my car. When I had my first ding after 3 months of ownership I immediately have it fixed(glad it was shallow). My wife then snickers and told me, "the next one will be deeper and painful". So whatever i do I park away from her car.

I'm sure when I get the car, my OCD will kick in and many foul expletives will be shouted with every bird poop, rock chip, etc. that happens. Hell, I even baby the car that I currently drive.

All other 2000 Corollas that I see driving around are either caked with dirt, missing fenders/bumpers/panels, windows with many cracks and the list keeps on going. Meanwhile, my little car is mostly in tip-top shape apart from miniscule paint coming off the door edges.

Yeah, I'm with you. Mine isn't quite as bad (yet) but after my initial amazement at the crappy paint these have, I don't care either. My car is red, and the front bumper and hood look like they were over-sprayed with white paint. And I don't drive it off-road or through gravel pits. My Tacoma has about 67k miles, and it has barely any chipped paint, including the front bumper. My Lexus has 37k miles, and the front bumper is immaculate. FR-S paint jobs are truly abysmal. So obsess or don't give a crap? I choose the latter. This is the first car that I can imagine owning until it is totally toast.

And the few dings and scratches on the doors are patina as far as I'm concerned. One thing I've learned over the years is that it takes about three days to get over damage to vehicles, etc. After a day or two of obsessing, by the third day it's usually forgotten, even if it's your fault- like backing up into something and creasing your bumper.

Guys like that ruin it for others, that's why there are a lot of cops that frequent Alki. Go hoon around in an empty parking lot or other area instead of a busy public street.
