Interesting article but using their criteria I bet the 86 would murder the LFA.

The FR-S is more relaxed and traditional sports car like. It doesn't have as much grip as the S2000 but that's what makes it fun. So in a way, you would be stepping down in performance but stepping up in fun.

Yeah, but fast cars are often not fun cars. Sure, you are impressed by the speed and grip but on the streets, that can only go so far.

That reminds me of the 458 Italia review by Jeremy Clarkson when he's like, "If I had just bought a Ferrari F430, I would probably want to commit suicide right now."

I would agree with you about the S being almost like a 'race car for the street' type vehicle. It's loud and uncomfortable when you're just putting along, but there are few vehicles as engaging and few vehicles whose engines make me smile as much as the S2000. I find myself rev matching everywhere I go just so I (and everyone else, seeing as I have a loud exhaust) can just hear the F20 unwind down the rev range.

And yeah, you're right about not all 'fast' cars being that much fun. My car before my S was a 480 rwhp 300ZX Twin Turbo... Really awesome car, went like stink on the highway, and was always impressive to passengers, but it wasn't exactly the most fun car to drive. Sure, a quick highway blast is definitely entertaining, but dip that thing into a corner at a decent pace, and it felt more uncomfortable than running out of toilet paper in a public stall.

That being said, I got very close to working out a deal today on an FR-S and trading in my S, even though I know I'd get more selling it on my own. Luckily (and unluckily) for me, the vehicle that the dealer initially thought was available turned out to be pre sold. I think as long as the car is 90% as engaging and entertaining as the S2000 (which, from early reviews, it seems like it will be), it will be a good purchase seeing as it will be about 200% more comfortable and practical as a DD.

Yeah, the sound of the S2000 engine is the best of all 4 cylinder car engines IMO. But as a daily driver, the FR-S is that much more practical and fuel efficient and comfortable while, as you say, about 90% as engaging. But I think it will be even more entertaining because of the more progressive balance and lower limits.

BTW, did you get to sit in the FR-S? If so, what were your impressions in comparison?

From what I've read about the LFA, probably not. The same qualities that make the 86 stand out among it's peers is are the same as what makes the LFA stand out in it's rarified air. I guess you could go far out on a limb and say the 86 is the layman's LFA, less the glorious orgasm inducing sound and 352hp for a $350k discount?
