Stock to the bone. I noticed that the car was less whiny on the highway. The deeper tone seems quiter, regardless of what the cheap phone decibel meter says.

I have a real SPL meter, but I've already removed the entire apparatus from the engine bay. It looks much cleaner now.

So is this hole on the right hand side no matter if your car is LHD or RHD?

I took a quick look at my LHD car and couldn't find it.

Maybe I should look harder

That's correct. It will always be on the right side of the car. It's hiding right under the top edge of the carpet.

I installed the Canadian Tire one and it works but isn't ideal as it isn't easily removable. I will search around for a suitable Canadian replacement.

But in the meantime, I'm loving the natural sound of the engine and exhaust, and now I don't get those headaches from long drives anymore!

The sound tube gives you a headache? I would have loved to see you ride along with my old setup. Borla UEL headers, JDL catless over pipe and front pipe, and a GReddy Evo 3 without silencers.

I think it more had to do with driving with that sound in a car with the windows up. My ear literally fell tired and sore by the end of a 2 hour drive.

There have been actual studies that prove that constant frequencies of sound like with the sound tube creates mental fatigue. I've noticed this on other cars after long drives as well

This makes highway drive 75+ miles a lot better. If I have ac blowing on 4th wind speed. Noise and wind noise cancel out. 😀

Thank you all, excellent information

I have a brand new 2013 Scion FR-S Series 10, which I love to drive more than any of the past "sports" cars I've owned (928 Porshe, Datsun 3000, Jaguar XKE, Triumph Spitfile, MGA).

One of few annoyances was the cockpit noise, which seemed so odd for such a well built car. I had no idea about the "noise" tube. After reading this, I tested it with a plug (red wire nut backwards) with great results and then went straight to Lowes and found the Hillman caps just as described. Awesome.

Thank you all so much. This renews my love of real sports cars where driving is the skill, instead of just "aiming" a muscle car..

Thanks to the OP for sharing this. I was reading up a bit about the car yesterday and found two different tips that make me love this car even more.

1) Plugged off sound tube. Cabin is much quieter now.
2) Turned car key to ACC. Held down radio volume button and entered options menu. Corrected car model from TC to FRS. Audio sounds much better.

Thanks again!

Did this the other day with the cap in the OP. The cap is not listed on Lowe's website but they do have them in the hardware section. Its not a huge difference in quieting the noise in the cabin, especially at highway speeds, but it does get rid of the harsh sound the tube delivers. Worth it in my opinion.

WOW!

First of all, no way is the design of that plug in the glove box an accident! It's clearly designed to fit that rubber firewall opening, isn't it?

More importantly, I am sure glad I found this forum! First time I drove an FRS it had the TRD exhaust, so I was sure I was going to get that. Because of this forum I now have the OFH/OFT and the free sound tube plug, instead. For less than the cost of the TRD exhaust I have a car that runs MUCH better, inside the car sounds better, and outside the car is quieter!
