Not immediately but that's a jackass move. He can wear out his own shift forks. Fuck that noise.

It will never cease to amaze me how fragile folks think manual trannys are! Over the years I have heaped every kind of abuse imaginable on a long series of gearboxes. The only one I ever managed to hurt was a '39 Ford box hooked to a '57 Chev small block. That was a box designed to handle about 80 HP, and the engine I had it hooked to was putting out about 250. And it still lasted almost 2 years! (and that was when I was 16-17 years old...I was kinda hard on cars back then! )

BTW, I almost always have my hand on the shifter. What harm do you think that might cause?

But...but...but Dom always double clutches in the F&F and that is a serious documentary on how to drive and uses nothing but real world physics!

Sort of answer your own question in your following post. The modern transmission and every thing attached to it is far tighter then the old "find em and grind em" sloppy shifters of the past and resting your hand on it can indeed cause issue.
I also have had dozens of different tranny/shifter sets up and only blown one up (also by purely overpowering it) and would not use a modern one for a hand rest no matter who tells me it is fine.

I agree that there was some pretty awful shifting from Mr. Leno.

You know Jay personally? You chill with him often? Cool.
He is a rich guy that owns a pile of cars and has a slightly entertaining Youtube channel. That does not automatic make him a good driver. His driving sucked in that video.

You quoted me. Did you not get past the first sentence? I learned my lesson the hard way after my B210 started popping out of 4th.

Full disclosure, I've never seen his channel. Going to have to check him out. Strictly based on this video, his technique sets a piss-poor example. Resting one's hand on the gearshift lever for any length of time absolutely does result in excessive wear between the shift fork and the ...sleeve/slider/collar shifter thingy.

Eventually those two sliding surfaces wear down to the point the gear itself never fully engages. Takes a long time but it's absolutely a thing.

I'm one of those "Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance" types. Yeah, pretty sensitive about that stuff. Felt like an ass when I learned how I caused my own problem. Live & learn.
