Only thing I could think of is some kind of insurance scam… Maybe their intent was to back into you while parked, then accuses you of rear ending them. Lesson learned is to never pull over for anyone unless it's the police.

Sounds suspicious to me. Who's parent (PARENTS, mind you) go to that extent to get the VIN off of a special edition car so that their daughter can get parts for it?

The weirdest part is that I can't think of any other legitimate reason for needing your VIN and not using the one on the daughter's own car.

Actually OP left out the end of the story where they get into a big gunfight, a cop comes out of nowhere and shoots a random black dude for no reason, and Obama flies by in his personal jet fighter on his way to deliver freedom to a sandy country, then a lifted Ram driven by a bald eagle runs over everyone while blasting a Jason Aldean cover of the national anthem.

Typical tuesday night in America.

I haven't dealt with this at Subaru, but with my Jeep, whenever I need a part from the dealership, the guy at the parts counter won't even talk to me without a VIN number. The way they explained it to me was that they went to that system to avoid handing out the wrong part and having to deal with returns. As the mods to my Jeep get more extreme, their system doesn't always work all that well.

So if these people were trying to buy a part or accessory for their daughter, perhaps as a birthday present or other surprise, they may have run into the same issue when they called the dealership parts department. Most of us on this forum are car people and would just get the part number ourselves and order it elsewhere, but others who are not car people might not know where else to go except the dealership. So they think they need a VIN number to buy the parts, but they don't want to ask their daughter for it because it would ruin the surprise.

Or maybe they were up to something.

Either way, I wouldn't have given them the number. What I would do is ask to see a picture of their daughter, and if she was hot, I would offer to help them order the part they wanted.

All you conspiracy/scam theorists know that anybody can walk up to your parked car and have a VIN in about 5 seconds right? It is right there in plain view on your dash.
No mystery here. They just wanted a RS number to get a RS part. At least they had the decency to ask in a polite (albeit bizarre) manner instead of just finding one parked and jotting down the VIN.

You know, I went to buy a car once, wrote down the VIN in the process of checking it out. I told the guy I was going to look up the VIN before making an offer.

He told me no, get the hell out you cannot have the VIN off this car. I asked why, he said it was because I could get keys for the car from a dealership and steal it.

Car was obviously a salvage title, in a bad rear end accident and he was flipping it to make a quick buck after fixing it up with 20 lbs of bondo and a sledgehammer. If I ran the VIN it would have confirmed it. Thought the guy was going to shoot me cause I took down the VIN, immediately handed him the paper I wrote it down on and walked away. If he got his asking price he would probably have gotten $2-$4k profit depending on how much labor went into it.

People are dumb and have lots of misconceptions. They probably couldn't do anything with the VIN of importance to your life but at the same time it was weird, sketchy, and I probably would have said no out of dumbfounded confusion as well. Just sneak a picture next time you see your daughter if that's the case.

Sorry for the ramble.

Ban VIN's, for the children. Nobody needs a VIN with a shoulder thing that goes up.

"Obama flies by in his personal jet fighter on his way to deliver freedom to a sandy country"

That's awesome. Is it the same jet he flew when he killed OBL, or is that one in the Nobel museum?

God if all it took was a VIN to get keys cut then everybody with a North American car made after about 1990 should worry since by law the VIN must be visible from outside the car on the drivers side of the dash.
