When operating at steady speed or coasting, it behaves just like an open diff. This is my first car with one. I got a big shit-eating grin when I first noticed it because it feels just like my brother's 911.

Finally changed mine out, dealership told me with a straight face "oh the BRZ is supposed to feel that way when shifting, it's notoriously notchy.. it's a brand new car I can assure you that it doesn't have any metal flakes in it already." I think I might send these over.

For reference, here are my drain plugs at 7400 miles. Pretty dirty for a break in. Guy next to me with a ZL1 Camaro was pretty shocked, but said every manufacturer is different. Hope so.

Thanks for the writeup! Changed out my diff and transmission fluid using Motul 300. My transmission took 2.3 L and my rear differential took 1.1 L.
The new fluid feels thinner. I get more sensation through the shifter. Also makes the transmission less notchy when cold. When warm, it's not too much of a difference and I still get an occasional grind into 3rd/5th. Haven't noticed a difference with the rear diff fluid, but will see after my next track day.

30,000 kms, did both trans and diff (motul for diff, pentosin for trans) - worked great thanks to the excellent walk-thru. My plugs looked like the ones above - full of crud.

Is someone able to explain or post a pic of filling Trans from above car instead of while underneath? I assume you don't drop the fill hose through the body somewhere and just rely on gravity over any incline in hose angle to fill hole?
I usually pull shifter assembly for filling up tranny in my other car lol. Eff those nozzle deals... Thx |

Crush washers
Does anyone know where I can pick up (prefer to order online) the crush washers needed for this job?
Maybe some part numbers? I'm hoping I could just pick them up from the Napa around the corner but prefer to have a part number on hand. Also, is there any difference between the Oil pan crush washer/Trans/Diff crush washers? |

Can't I use Allen key instead of the hex bit socket??

Of course you can use Allen keys to loosen it, if you have the confidence in breaking those bolts loose with stubby Allen keys. But to tighten it, unless your hand and arm is an biological torque wrench, kinda hard to tighten to proper torque specs.
Do it right, with the right tools so you don't regret it later. |
