Personally, I doubt it will end up being any lighter than the current gen Camaros but the numbers won't lie once it gets officially released to the public.
There were a couple pictures next to an impala before... and just going by how the fifth gen and the prototype compared proportionally to the Impala, the new one appears to be a little bit shorter in length, and a little bit shorter in height. It doesn't appear to be any thinner in width (which personally, I like that fact).

All in all, speculating, it appears set up to lose a little bit (100 lbs max imo), but who knows if it gains all the weight savings back when they upgrade the interior to compete with the new Mustang. Like you, I wouldn't be surprised if it weighed the same as the fifth gen. I hope they prove me wrong.

There's a few other pictures out there catching it from the rear and a more direct line. You'll see the alpha chassis a little bit more. The car is a bit longer in the front and not as wide.

GM Press Release for today.

http://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/n...30-camaro.html

Quote:
DETROIT – For the all-new, 2016 Chevrolet Camaro, the team was challenged to improve the handling, acceleration and fuel economy of the award-winning current model.

To meet all three objectives, the team focused on a singular mission: reduce mass. By obsessively searching for opportunities to save ounces, the team pared more than 200 pounds off the Camaro compared with the fifth-generation model.
[...]
A new architecture, one of the most mass-efficient ever from General Motors, is responsible for much of the weight savings.

Additionally, dozens of small changes cumulatively contributed to shedding pounds. For example, the beam that supports the instrument panel is now made of aluminum, saving 9.7 pounds (4.4 kg) over the steel beam on the current generation Camaro.

In addition, the front and rear suspension assemblies are now aluminum, and links on some models feature an intricate, structurally optimized design made with a rigid composite material that’s even lighter than aluminum. As a result, the total weight for the suspension is 21 percent lighter compared to current steel-intensive assemblies.
All good news. Excited to see how it actually ends up feeling.

Since aluminum parts cost considerably more than steel ones it will be interesting to see what sort of impact these changes will make in the price.

Wow much respect for GM. They said they were going to shed weight and actually did it (unlike Ford).

If they've improved the interior design and the outward visibility, I will be looking closely at this in a few years.

To counterbalance this good news, GM issues this recall today. Basically, the Chevy Volt, if left with the electrical system turned on long enough, will drain the battery, start the engine to recharge, and fill your house with CO.

I get that this is almost the same as leaving your gas powered car turned on and getting out, but seems like a basic miss on the safety factor.

That said, I'm looking forward to seeing what the new Camaro looks like. 200lbs is not insignificant, but I would have like to have seen more.

My wife got some battery powered candles from the dollar store that turn themselves off if there is no movement around them for half an hour so surely GM should have though of that.

I'll be waiting for a 2017/2018 Camaro most likely. Let the first gen adopters work out the kinks.

I gambled with the 2013 FR-S, but it turned out to not have many problems at all. I just happened to get lucky with the dice roll, but I don't think I will buy a first model year car again.

I'm going to hold my breath on the smaller and lighter until we get some actual specs.

Smaller? Maybe. Lighter? Doubt it.

The new Mustang was supposed to be lighter too, but we all know how that worked out.

Current Camaro weighs ~3800-4200 depending on trim and options, so this will weigh in the neighborhood of 3600-4000?

It is a sad world we live in when Chevy can be excited about that.

On the flip side, can you imagine how many 86 owners would get excited over having a factory twin that makes 180hp to the wheels?
