would 17x9 +42 all round with 225/40r17 tyres Work with aftermarket coils? Would it be flush at least?

Cheers.

Hit coil over in the front ...

Flush on the front, tuck in on the rear.

great thread, very informative. noobish question: lets say you run a square set up, same size wheels and tires all around. say 17x8. but you don't want it to look tucked in the back. so you add spacers on the rear to make the rear more flush, or get rear rims with lower offset. how would that impact performance, having the same width rims and tires all around but a wider track in the back?

Thanks for this post man, you gave me a great idea about how I want the color scheme of my future BRZ to be. I am going to go for a black BRZ with similiar wheels in powdercoat white from Work. Once again thanks for the post and its all mapped out in my head with how I want to approach this next project.

Widening the track will have similar results to having a staggered setup. The wider track will reduce weight transfer between the tires and increase overall grip in the rear. Though it would likely have less of an effect than larger tires so it may not matter a whole lot.

How much do you think that will effect handling? In other words how much understeer will it promote?

For the average driver? Only a little, maybe not enough for a driver like that to notice. But for an AutoXer, enough that the spacers would likely be removed for competition.

Thanks for verifying. what about if the rims were 17x9 +35 instead of +42 wrapped in 225/40 or 225/45?

Cheers!

The setup above should only be about 4-6mm closer to the suspension. Is there really that little clearance?

The AVO car uses 18x8.5+47 which should have the same suspension clearance and they don't have any problems.

17x9+42 are ~19mm further inboard aren't that? Unless my math is way off. 17x8+42 would be ~7mm further inboard.

Based on my math that's 12mm further in and 38 out.. ie I'd guess that would stick out past the fenders.

Not sure what the inside clearance is though.

Such speculation...All bets are off next weekend when I pick up my BRZ...and then test fit my 17x9 42 with 245's... Let me emphasize that it just that ...a test fit..if the 42 won't work..I will have to send them back and get the 38's.. I will be taking lots of pics and measurements...I only have one rim mounted..I will be be going to coilovers which should gain some valuable clearance...but adding camber, with plates, also which pushes the strut more inboard... to gain another few mm...-2.0 degrees with 0 toe ... until AST is finished with their suspension...I might pick up some ground-controls for the time being to gain valuable clearance. ..
Sched: Pick the car up sat
Sun: test fit 2 sets of wheels...
....17x9 42 w/245/40/17
....17x7 53 Factory option BBS ..(the real reason to fit these is to see if the OE BRZ wheels will clear my Subaru 4pots...if they do...I will use the OE to daily drive on the speedwagon)

Then we will know...WITH Pics... so there is no misunderstanding...

Bill

Well, the tire is the widest part, until you go to the 9" rim which is 3mm wider that the 225mm tire. So comparing a 215 wide tire at a 48mm offset to a 228mm rim at 42mm offset is actually only a 1mm reduction in clearance now that I think about it.

EDIT: Actually, now that I think about it, width is measured from inside the bead seats, so there's about 1/2" of extra width. So we're at 7mm closer to the suspension ultimately.

I'm assuming he's measuring the distance from the wheel itself, not the tire. Not even all 215/45/17s will have the same width so that's a crapshoot. I'm assuming he's saying that there's not enough clearance at the wheel itself without a tire.

The wheel itself, based on my math anyways, will be 19mm closer to the suspension than the OEM wheel.

Doesn't really matter to me, I don't plan on 9" wide wheels anyways
