Essentially, the car "OS" is just virtualized on your Android phone via the App and then rendered on your compatible headunit.

It's still an OS from the car infotainment perspective, but it's just an app from the phone perspective.

Maybe they are using the term "operating system" in a way that I am unfamiliar with.
It is an OS, but your original link was for the companion app for your phone.
The app itself does nothing without being connected to a compatible Android auto unit.
This is what the app looks like when installed.

There are currently 3 pioneer headunits capable of Android Auto. Typical of Pioneer, I feel like they are trying to make a headunit with too much crap on it so they can sell it for more.
If someone offers a stripped down headunit with a capacitive display that runs ONLY Android auto and FM HD radio, I'll buy in. 300-400 would be a great price point.

I noticed the Dashtab series has not been on the website for about a week. Anyone know if they had some problem with them? did anyone order one?

If you're willing to wait, then wait it out.
The pioneers are first to market and there will likely be cheaper ones

I think I'm going to wire up an external mic using the instructions on the Ca-Fi forums. My biggest question is what mic have people used and had good luck with? I don't mind spending some money to get something of better quality.

Let us know how it goes and what you end up going with mic wise. Not really sure what's good out there.

My point was that some of the phone specific Andoroid OS images have a dependency on the 'Radio' module in the phone's hardware and if it does not detect a SIM card at boot, the OS will halt and give you an error message. Other Android OSs are configured to NOT need the sim card (like a dumb tablet) and will boot without starting the Radio module.

I guess I could try it on an older tablet (or a phone with the SIM card removed) to see...
Android Auto is not an OS. Android Auto is an application that runs on an OS. The head unit component of Android Auto will run on Android (like our units, or the unit Parrot announced) or QNX, which is owned by Blackberry and powers a lot of head units out there (I think Pioneer might run QNX since CarPlay and Android Auto both run on Pioneer's units and both of those systems run on QNX, and it's clearly not Android). As I and others have already pointed out, the Android Auto app that's on the app store is a companion app for your Lollipop-only phone.

I am about to pick one of these up, and through the whole thread i cant find anyone who says they are using a 3g/4g dongle instead of wifi. I would prefer to use a tmobile sim in it rather than deal with tethering. I seem to recall seeing the 4g modem as an option on the cafi site, but cant find it anymore. Any help would be appreciated.

I dunno what carrier(s) the Ca-Fi provided cellular dongle is compatible with. Honestly, if your cellphone plan includes tethering ability, that's the way the way to go. You can get an app for Android phones (IIRC, it's free) that will enable the hotspot whenever the phone connects to the HU by bluetooth, so you don't even have to bother enabling it manually.
