It's not necessary anymore. When a Porsche GT3, which is the next best thing to a street legal racecar, only comes with an automatic transmission, then the technology is mature enough to handle whatever needs the driver might have.

For the record, I have a manual. I love my manual. The automatic shifts better than I do, though, and that's fine with me.

Ummm, my daily is a manual and I have no problem driving it in NYC rush hour every day. Is it annoying at times? Perhaps.

I love the auto tranny in the 86, however I must admit I never drive in auto mode because I like to be in "control" of my gears and my right hand goes crazy if its not doing anything

The manual in the 86 is fantastic but so is the auto; nothing like double tapping to downshift two gears and power through an on ramp :burn rubber:

And yes, 4.88 gears are a must! Thats my next mod

Ummmm...many of the guys responding about the AT are not exactly "this generation"! Just as many of the "Bruuuh you need MT to feel connected to the car" BS responses are!

Beginning to suspect is just a troll post anyway since OP has never responded once or posted anything else on any subject.

LOL I think I can safely say the "PDK" gearbox in a GT3 is much more sophisticated than an FR-S AT. It doesn't have a torque converter - it isn't a slush box. If you're a "I drive an automatic." kind of guy because you're driving a GT3 then you're excused. It's completely different "technology".

The FR-S MT is closer to a GT3 AT than the FR-S AT is.

I bought an FR-S AT initially and had to trade it in. I hated it. Sure it shifts smooth but, fuck, so does my sister's Corolla.

I'd love to drive a manual, but due to injuries, I can't do it for a car I DD. Also, after DD'ing a manual for 2 years or so, it isn't for me. Rather be able to just brake and release the brake in heavy traffic with no other driver inputs needed. If my FR-S was a weekend toy, then I probably would have gotten a manual since I wouldn't be doing long driving stints with it, and would only need it to get from my house to the back roads.

I drove a AT before I bought my manual.

I'd say the worst thing about the AT is the lack of torque the engine has is more apparent with an AT since in a MT you can control the shift easier and keep the engine above the torque dip.

Test drive one and if your fine with how it feels then buy it.

If not, I recommend looking for another car with more torque out of the box.

I suspect most of the AT drivers in this thread are over 40. I learned to drive in a three-in-the-tree Rambler, and this is my first AT car. Bet I'm having as much fun as the average MT driver, and there is at least one poster in this thread I would bet is faster in his POS AT than any MT driver here.

It's OK, us older guys understand your ego and self worth depends entirely on your transmission. But then again, you have an FR-S or want one, and are not looking for a transportation appliance anyway.

How is an AT harder to keep out of the dip?

If you swap the final drive (a new one is like 400something from weir performance) you can hit the same 0-60 as the MT and you can increase your lower range torque hugely without having to stay in high RPMs on the highway or anything. Everyone who's done it has been immeasurably happy. Not hard for DD either but you can be way faster. They're pretty track competitive other than keeping you from downshifting directly into red line.

The only reason 0-60 is different for auto is because the gear ratios are completely different. I own mechanical watches, and have some of my favorite jazz on vinyl. I also totally get why people don't want to wind their watch or listen to 5 songs at a time lol. But the arguments that it's some sort of incomparable shade of a car in automatic are just dumb.

Edit: at least in manual mode, and I am fairly sure normal driving, lockup clutch is in past first so it's a rigid transmission.

Was going to comment on that. Given you can drive in MT mode and pick your gears just the same as the actual MT

EDIT: I haven't had trouble with torque, driving in either full auto mode or manual mode. The auto mode does take longer to respond if you aren't using the paddles, but that's to be expected. But I do also realize these threads devolve into an e-peen measuring contest, so whatever.

What is with you older guys being so defensive about driving the AT and talking down to MT drivers?? I hate this forum sometimes.

I like to drive a manual. Maybe when I'm your age I'll get an AT and not care anymore. Maybe MT's won't even exist at that point. I know my dad used to drive nothing but MT's and now he likes AT's... he's also 63 and just doesn't care about that kind of stuff at his age. That's FINE. I don't think anyone here chose the MT because it's "faster" or "manlier" and if you did, well, you suck too. The MT felt much more responsive to me than the AT, more peppier if you will. It was a night and day difference so I chose the MT. Sure it sucks in bumper to bumper traffic but that's the price you pay for MT.

God damn this thread is annoying, why do I keep returning? Why is it suddenly stupid to drive an MT???

EDIT: I also hate paddle shifters since they turn with the steering wheel. Gets awkward when your hands aren't in the right place for them. I didn't like the automatic, fuck me right??

This is definitely a first for me. I think most of the time, it's the MT guys bashing AT guys. Interesting how you would feel that way.

Anyhow, back on topic. As mentioned before, swapping out the final drive is probably one of the best options for the AT to match the MT in performance. I've looked into this modification myself, but I'm holding off as final drive changes are illegal in the STX class for auto-x.

Dude chill!
A lot of us old guys drive the MT and younger guys drive the AT as well and yes many of the responses to the AT guys most certainly do in involve comments like it's "faster" or "manlier"! These guys are just defending their choice from the multitudes of MT owners that say the AT is crap! It isn't and they have every right to press home their case.
And besides if you father wants to be an old fart that is his problem not something to throw at the rest of us "old guys"!!!

I knew we would need a ref here eventually!
