Apparently the thread started back up again when the new Engine Swaps category was added and I never got any notifications. Someone actually mentioned this thread in it haha.

But we're getting off topic from this awesome build.

The "flange" is the important thing... With that you could bolt up basically ANY Subaru motor to the 86 drivetrain. Then its just a matter of wiring.

If it would just be "the flange and a few wires", this wouldnīt have been the first car.
As you can see many have thought about the swap, just nobody has digged deep into the topic to do it. There a load of details to be solved in order to succeed.

I know its not that simple. My previous car was a Impreza with a swap that was actually CARB certified (California legal swap).

The wiring certainly isn't "easy" but there are people out there who can do it, and locating the intercooler and such isn't exactly something you can just bolt on.

But that adapted for the transmission is a custom piece that someone with engineering expertise had to design and figure out exactly what to do.

The REAL reason why we haven't seen this done more often, is that the Forester Turbo with the DIT engine and the WRX with the DIT engine are not exactly common and not exactly CHEAP to acquire!

I was looking into this swap back before the car even came out, and it really won't be a "common" swap for a few more years when 86's get cheap as nails and there are a lot of wrecked WRX's to get these drivetrains from (like right now, you can get 90's Subaru's for cheap and swap in WRX drivetrains for cheap because well, that stuff is old now).

PLUS there are really good turbo and supercharger kits for the twins, even some that are legal here in California. I really don't see myself spending $10k+ on a DIT swap when I can get a street legal supercharger kit for $5k and do the same thing, same with a lot of other folks.

Just wanted to add that the fact they are putting together a kit solution for this NOW will REALLY pay off for them and the community in the long-term, and thanks for all the effort!

Any updates?

I am still curios if I can get this swap CARB'd. I am kind of hazy on the legality of swapping a modified fa20dit.

Swapping a current USDM engine into another vehicle can be CARB'd, but I am not sure about a modified to fit one.

Engine needs to meet 3 requirements:

1) same MY or newer than your car
2) needs to have all existing emissions equipment (from the doner engine) intact
3) all electronics need to work

... I'd just buy a Cayman GT4 after all said and done, to be honest.

Hi all,

We are continuously working on the kit finalisation.
The longest job is always to workout the final small details, in order to make it perfect & complete.
Itīs being added any bolt, washer, any auxiliary Subaru OEM part needed to be part of the kit to have it 100% complete, not speaking about the already mentioned bolt-on conversion stuff (wiring etc.)

Surely everybody is "bored" with waiting so long, especially as itīs been announced already, but surely especially every end user will finally be very happy about a packagen which swaps over in 1 day, without any hassle and running around through different shops to hunt for any missing bitīs n pieces.

So, still some patience needed, but be assured, itīs being worked on the topic

As per CARB, donīt count on it that this wil be available anytime soon.
It is not on the initial ToDo list.

Watch out for news in this thread

BTW if any companies might be interested for distribution rights of such kits (of course with regional exclusivity) they should contact stohl racing.

EDIT: and of course it is being worked on perfromance upgrades already!

Agree with you on some points, especially on the point about the swap.
GT/BRZ was always a great car for me, but alsao a total no-go because of the weak performance.

Lately my main fun car was/is a VX220 Turbo (Elsie MK2 Chassis with GM 2.0 Turbo engine) which means 250 hp with retune and 900 kg total weight.

The std. FA20D would simply bore the hell out of me....

What I do not agree with, is the point with Supercharger Kits.
Aftermarket Turbo, OK can do same things, but donīt compare the usual SC kit equipped BRZ performance with the DITīs
Thats a whole different story perfromancewise.
Iīve extensively driven a SC BRZ just when the development fpor the DIT kit has started about 1 year ago.

Itīs nice, but some 300ish Nm against 450-500... thatīs simply not comparable.

Some cars to name which have been outperformed on some rolling starts during the last weeks.

335i E92
Golf 6 GTI with over 300 hp and DSG
Mazda 3 MPS tuned
Mercedes A45 AMG (3 car lengths at the end of 3rd gear)

(BRZ DIT set to 1,5 bar peak boost)

Plus what you shouldnīt forget, the std. FA20D can be sold also, so some $ refund possible.
But letīs speak about costs later when the exact kit extent/cost is confirmed.

Honestly... I was surprised too.

When we "met" coming from 2 off ramps which joined into a 3 laned road, I said to my 2 passengers: "OK guys, this time Iīm done" (until this day, I havenīt met a faster car on the streets, willing to play)

In the first try, he started accelerating a little bit earlier from 2nd, and in 4th gear I was starting to catch up, but there was not enough space on the road because of cars in front...
Amazing sound what comes out of the AMG tailpies during shifts. They run impressively aggressive ignition cut/retard settings wiht the double clutch gearbox for being OEM.

2 junctions later, we managed to be in the first lane side by side, so we had a standing still start.
We left off at the same time, 2nd gear already 1 length, and after putting it int 4th, he was backwards ar. 3 car lentghs!

And yeah.... i was like OMG, that was amazing .
NOTE: AMG has 360 hp and 7-speed double clutch tranny
After stopping at the next lights, I couldnīt hold myself back saying to him "Your carīs quite quick"
Iīm sure that guy didnīt understand the world how a car 1/3rd of the price and nearly half the power left him behind, at least that was how his face looked like as he just said, with a forced smile: "mhm..." haha...

However to be fair, he didnīt use the launch control, but on the other hand he was 2 persons in total while I had 2 passengers being 3 -ups.

Just to clarify, this was NOT with the OEM 300 hp 400 Nm settings, but with 1.5 bar of boost and a expected 340 hp.
However, still FULL stock engine (even with TGVs still in place), OEM N/A exhaust muffler etc. etc.
So plenty of room for more.

Side note:

2 days ago I DID finally meet the first car faster.... itīs a GC8 with around 430 whp.....

Summary:

DIT IS different than typical SC kit
