Hey, I know you're a cautious guy. That's not a bad thing. I also drive an automatic, I am probably less cautious by nature and probably have more driving experience. That last part is just because I'm old, I'm not bragging.
Anyway, I want to share my thoughts on the manual mode of the 86 with you, @SquadRogue

Manual mode with paddle shifts is fun, especially on a track day, where you have to brake and accelerate a lot, and can anticipate what gear you will soon want to be in. Practising this is a Good Thing. You won't break your engine or gearbox. Keep it safe and legal, though.

Manual mode is only really useful for very aggressive driving. In city traffic it's just a nuisance, like a car with manual transmission. When coasting on the freeway it's pointless.

Personally, after driving a lot in manual mode trying to master it in this particular car, I have almost completely ceased using manual mode for anything but track days and very slippery, icy roads where shifting gears at the wrong moment means risking loosing both traction and control, and keeping the RPM in the low range is wise.

My favourite aggressive driving style is to stay in Drive with Sport and VSC Sport engaged, using the paddle to shift down if I know I want to speed up rather soon (just beating the kickdown, basically, and it feels good) or to engage engine brake when coasting downhill (this also feels good). I let the AT take care of shifting up, since it does it more accurately than I am able to.

Of course, aggressive driving is dangerous both to you and your surroundings, and requires gradual practise. So my advice is to not use VSC Sport until you're comfortable with how your car loses traction in normal mode and you're quite confident you can handle it, every time, in any situation. And don't turn VSC completely off on public roads, that's where the fine line between "aggressive" and "stupid" goes. In my opinion. Other people may disagree and call me reckless for using VSC Sport, and maybe I am. I haven't caused a crash this millennium, that's my only defense.

I sincerely hope you find this informative.

Thank you Sarlacc I never knew that shifting at a turn may make the car lose control, it doesn't make sense to me, can you explain the mechanics of a shift, turn and loss of control?

I met somebody from my school a few days ago, I was thinking about getting a IG: SquadRogue sticker on my car. Just one sticker. The guy doesn't know who I am, but his name is thatphilipinoguy

Shifting gears can have the same effect on the balance of the car as braking or stepping on the gas pedal. On slippery surfaces such as ice or gravel, this can cause either the front wheels or the rear wheels to lose traction. If the front wheels loses traction it's called understeer (the car goes straight instead of following the intended turn), if the rear wheels loses traction it's called oversteer (the back end flips out and the car turns into the corner). If it's a very, very slippery surface such as wet ice, recovery from such loss of traction can be very challenging and accidents happen. So on wet ice, the safest way to enter a turn is in neutral or clutch engaged, and not touching the brake pedal. That way each wheel has optimal traction with the surface.

I don't understand your train of thought here. Can you please explain this in some more detail?

EDIT:
A quote from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Understeer_and_oversteer

Limit conditions:
When an understeer vehicle is taken to the grip limit of the tires, where it is no longer possible to increase lateral acceleration, the vehicle will follow a path with a radius larger than intended. Although the vehicle cannot increase lateral acceleration, it is dynamically stable.
When an oversteer vehicle is taken to the grip limit of the tires, it becomes dynamically unstable with a tendency to spin out. Although the vehicle is unstable in open-loop control, a skilled driver can maintain control past the point of instability with counter-steering, and/or correct use of the throttle or even brakes; this can be referred to as drifting. However, at some limit in lateral acceleration, it is not physically possible for even the most skilled driver to maintain a steady state and spinout will occur.

These limit condition occurs on snow and ice not only sooner, but also less gradual than on dry tarmac or concrete. That means you as a driver have less time to react, There's less time from you feel the tires start slipping until you're facing backwards or ploughing into geography/architecture, when friction is low. There's math and Newton and stuff, if anyone is interested.

How old are you? I did spend some time in Georgia back in the mid 80s!
