So PC gamers, what are your thoughts on the Steam machines that are coming out? I'm thinking of a secondary gaming source to compliment my XB1 and these intrigue me. I don't need a full blown PC, but the idea of having the ability to play PC games on my TV is appealing. Steam seems like it has so many more gaming options than the current consoles are offering.

So no PC gamers and/or Steam fans have any thoughts on these?

Honestly, I had kind of heard these were going to be a thing, but I haven't even looked into these stand-alone machines since I game almost exclusively on my built system and would have zero interest in them. That said, if they turn out to be reliable and reasonably priced, that would be awesome.

Currently, if I feel like playing Steam on TV, I just connect my HDMI from my PC to my big screen LED and enable Steam's TV mode. I guess these new systems would just be in Steam's TV mode all the time? I really would need to sit down and read about them before forming a good opinion.

This was the article that caught my eye and made me start thinking about these. I also read the comments section to that article, which was also illuminating.

The game selection for XB1 is pretty limited as far as I am concerned right now. There's a couple of titles on PS4 that look interesting, but I can't get on XB1. Spending another $400 to $500 on another game console that doesn't have a large selection of games isn't something I want to do at this time.

I don't need a full blown desk top for gaming at this time since I have 2 laptops that cover all my home computing needs, so having an ability to play PC games on my TV with little to no hassle at about the same price point as another gaming console seems like a win/win to me. I know a lot of people seem to like Steam.

This quote right here is something I agree 100% with...

Quote:
It’s just a pre-built gaming rig that hooks up to their TV and runs Steam Big Picture, something all the do-it-yourself-ers out there could have made themselves for years now if they really wanted to.
The fact that they are pushing their own controller doesn't help either. I run steam on my desktop PC, put it on Steam Big Picture, plug in an Xbox Control via USB, and play games on the Steam library on my big screen. For games that require keyboard and mouse, I prefer to be sitting at my desk.

Are your laptops older and/or are graphics a huge concern for you? Not everyone needs 1080p resolution with max'ed out settings on every game, and you could already be doing the same thing with Steam installed on one of the laptops. Wouldn't cost you a thing to try it out, there's game demos and free-to-plays you can try it out with.

I can't read the comments on that article without logging in with an account, which seems dumb, so I haven't read those, but I agree whole-heartedly with the article author.

I was able to read the comments without having an account, usually there's a comment box over on the left side you have to click on to get to the comments.

Quite a few of the commentors who claimed to be PC gamers were actually slamming the article and they seemed to raise some valid points. Certainly your point is valid about hooking up a PC to your TV, no argument there. My laptops are Mac, not PC so not sure if Steam works on Mac OS, I'd have to look into that.

The biggest attraction was being able to hook up a simple box, similar to a gaming console and being able to have access to PC games on my TV without having to build a gaming PC and then have to hook it up to my TV, especially when I'm just going to play games on my TV with it.

OK I see them now. Some valid points here and there. Also, yes you can run Steam on Mac. Some of the games on the store may not work on Mac, but there's still a good selection. You can narrow search by OS (windows/Mac/Steam OS are the 3 choices in their store). I know the xbox controllers work natively with any windows PC, you may need drivers or an application to run them on Mac, but I'm pretty sure the software exists already. I keep bringing up that point just because it is nice to game using the same controller whether you're on the computer or the console.

One of the biggest reasons I sold my box and moved on to pc.

Plus most of the games I was waiting for on x1 are coming to pc.

Check out Kingdom come deliverance if you're into medieval rpgs. That game is going to be beautiful

Dude there is no help people in this elo are a joke. You're either on the team with the baddies or you're not, your only chance of getting out of it is praying you match up with the good team 5 games in a row

EDIT: just to give you some insight on my last 3 games after getting demoted from silver master elite.

First game: 1 guy afk

Second game: 4 people with 15 plus kills and that ONE person who is 3 and 26 I think we lost by 3 rounds or sometbing

Third game: game starts with TWO AFKERS...Wtfffffff

All my team, all lost.
