Aaron, I appreciate that you took the time to actually stop by, sign up, and clarify. We all make mistakes! Even though it came off as snide, my post was not a shot at you or your character, it was more of a personal afterthought that manifested itself as internet banter so please take it as such. Hey, welcome to the boards! |

Same here. I don't think it will be difficult to accomplish by yourself, but then again I'd like to hear if anyone has had any experiance installing a back up camera on their car too.

I think the best place to mount it would be right above the license plate or if you want to go all out have one custom built into the wing on the limited. I'm going to talk to my friend who owns a shop to see which way he recommends to do it. I wouldn't risk doing it myself though when you can have a professional shop do a clean job and everything will look factory.

I think reverse cameras will be mandatory for MY2014 cars.

It's an interesting one here in the UK. Not sure about the BRZ but all new Toyota's (including the GT86) come with the 'Toyota Touch' audio system/head unit. Every model in the Toyota range also comes with a reverse camera... except the GT86!

Huge for having the dignity of coming on this message board and admitting you made a small error. I look forward to reading your other articles. Considering the type of cars the BRZ and FR-S are, you'll find this particular message board to be quite an even-keeled, and fairly mature place. If you have something to say, throw it out there. It's not everyday we get to talk to one of the fellas responsible for serving up the stuff the rest of us consume so ravenously! Hey, sometimes it's nice to meet the chef, ya know?

To be fair, there is legislation that is being passed around to make them mandatory to avoid backing over children in driveways. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/28/bu...cars-rear.html It can eliminate ~100 deaths per year at a cost of ~$2.5 billion per year (~$200 per car). Don't forget that starting in 2007 TPMS was mandated for all cars, and stability control (and thus antilock brakes) is now mandated on all cars starting in 2012. Before that some cars didn't even come with ABS to keep costs down. That being said, 2014 may be too soon, but there's precedent for these kinds of features to be mandated. |

I support that claim as well. I read about it a few months back somewhere and I don't care to look it up at the moment, but the NY Times article should suffice. While it will drive up manufacturing costs (and ultimately the price of the car), it's the type of technology that's more of a double-edged sword. Cars are getting smarter and smarter as technology advances but, from real-world experience, operators are becoming more dependent on this technology and EXPECT the car to do all the work for them. The technology is supposed to assist, it shouldn't change driving habits to point where people won't even turn around and verify it's clear before backing up.
It's like those people who drive off of cliffs because their GPS told them to do so...I mean, come on people. |

How about this: All of you who are going to buy one, I hate you a little bit.
The FR-S and BRZ are terrific, and it's really cool to be one of the first to review it, because I think history will look back on it as one of the great cars of this era. Let's hope they don't screw it up when they give it the three-year face lift! (Maybe they'll add a backup camera...)Thanks for the kind words -- Aaron |
