We drive a combined total of about 45K per year, keep vehicles 5-7 years, or 100-120K. My total repair costs for all vehicles combined over the last 25 years wouldn't total $1000. That of course doesn't include regular maintenance (oil/filter changes, etc) or wear items (tires, batteries, etc). But those aren't covered by warranties anyway. Extended warranties are a loser's bet. Last edited by billwot; 03-05-2015 at 03:31 PM. |

I cancelled my warranty yesterday, i saved myself about 3k. I thought about it and ask many people that i came to the conclusion that it was not worth it. The car is fine with the basic warranty of a new car.

Everyone also needs to keep in mind that they are a business and want to make money. All the fine print that no one cares to read can hurt you in the end with a warranty. For ex: I purchased a ext. warranty from Toyota and the only mod I have on my vehicle is aftermarket HID. I was having issues with my car, dealer had my car for five days. It turned out to be a vacuum line but they tried to state that the issue was the HID kit and they were going to charge me for all the tests, time and part. If they want to get you with or without warranty, they will.

I paid 1100 for 7 year/100k bumper to bumper, I think it's called Toyota platinum extended care. I think the original price they quoted me was 2500 for it. I told them that was insane. Then they offered 1300 for 6 year 100k powertrain. I told them when I bought my civic in 98 100k warranty was 498 dollars. They said times have changed. So I then wanted them to throw in free maintenance for extended period and fog lights and a trunk mat. They got so focused on that and the fact that I was dissatisfied that they'd have to "order" the extras, they compensated me with the 7 year/100k for 1100 dollars. It was at that moment I also decided to keep my undervalued trade.

Ok so, Since i dropped of the extended warranty i asked chase finance department and they tell me that the dealer should send them a check with the amount being deducted from my loan.
I called the dealer and they tell me that i should see the amount being deducted from my loan at the end of the loan. Does somebody know how that works? Specially if you are financing with Chase? |

I think it'll be worth it. With everything that the Gold Plus offers (when I read the brochure) I think it'll pay for itself in the long run. Any thoughts? To the OP's question, it looks like you already cancelled it, but what kind of extended warranty did you have? There are two options, there is the Classic and the Gold Plus.

If I was considering it, I would have to decide what I was really getting. You aren't getting a 6 yr/75000 mile warranty. What you are getting is an extension of the manufacturer's warranty that you've already paid for. The FR-S has two warranties. A 3 yr/36,000 bumper to bumper and a 5 year/60000 powertrain warranty. So, assuming the BRZ is similar, and the Gold package is a bumper to bumper (with no exclusions) you purchased: Additional 3 year/39,000 Bumper to Bumper excluding drivetrain Additional 1 year/15,000 mile drivetrain warranty Since I drive over 20,000 miles a year, I can discount the year portion of the equation. The non-drivetrain portion of the warranty is basically useless as far as I'm concerned. There's typically so much "wear and tear" exclusions in it that it really doesn't pay for anything. Plus, I don't think in 30 years I've ever had something I would have had to fix that wasn't covered in the basic warranty. That means, for me, the $1,100 you paid only covers 15,000 miles of drivetrain warranty. Nope, not worth it. Now again, you situation may be different, and maybe the piece of mind is worth it to you. If so, OK. I just wouldn't assume you are going to gain back the money you spent, on average.

I drive just about 5,000 miles a year, if maybe a little more than that. I can always cancel that warranty and get some prorated money back, but that was back in August, so I actually don't know if i'll be getting any type of money back that's worth the hassle of cancelling it. Thoughts?

To "make back" your money then you would need to have a repair costing more than $1,100 during one of those two periods on a car with less than 35,000 miles on it at the end of the period. Still seems pretty unlikely to me. Now, that being said, my car will probably suffer a huge mechanical breakdown on my way home tonight just to prove me wrong.

Paid $1300 for 7 yr extended warranty......I have shitty luck so it's peace of mind....I had a extended warranty when I owned a 91 Honda Civic H/B....got my money's worth with that extended warranty A/C (condenser) broke week before new car warranty expired....then evaporator broke during extended warranty period....so for me it saved me a ton of money for A/C repairs....my other Scion I had before my FRS didn't have a extended warranty.....only thing I paid big bucks was $1300 to fix A/C....to OP yup you paid way too much for a extended warranty....hope every gets resolved for you.
