The thought crossed my mind... some of the testing i've seen indicates that the compounds of these tires were tweaked enough to be a lil faster .... but I'll still run my "slower" 140tw tires if no one will protest me. lol.

National-level? 200tw is the rule, and that transition was announced over a year in advance. So, as unsympathetic as it sounds, it's not like the change snuck up on us. The money expenditure on tires and other parts is one of the things about autocross that is a little more like chess.

Some. For instance, the R1R, they literally just changed the TW stamp. It's not like those really mean anything anyway since the individual companies are allowed to rate their own tires. |

a TW rating is a statement of the life expectancy of the tire under normal use the manufacturers can make the number as low as they want, but not as high as they want. If a true 140 tire gets labeled as 300 tomorrow, a third party could perform a test and find out that it certainly doesn't have the advertised longevity but this can work the other way around, a 300 tire can easily be labled as a 100 TW tire and easily pass any third party test because clearly it was designed to be much higher.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete....jsp?techid=48
"The problem with UTQG Treadwear Grades is that they are open to some interpretation on the part of the tire manufacturer because they are assigned after the tire has only experienced a little treadwear as it runs the 7,200 miles. This means that the tire manufacturers need to extrapolate their raw wear data when they are assigning Treadwear Grades, and that their grades can to some extent reflect how conservative or optimistic their marketing department is. Typically, comparing the Treadwear Grades of tire lines within a single brand is somewhat helpful, while attempting to compare the grades between different brands is not as helpful." |

well I'm sure I'd have a warranty case if I purchase a 300tw tire and have it degrade to the cords after only 10k of normal driving.
now, I'm not saying it's a worthy rating, I certainly don't use it to compare tires, but it's not a worthless rating either, otherwise why bother having it all?

as far as treadware goes, I think manufactureres claim softer treadwear ratings. Pretty darn sure our stock primacy tires are not 240s. They wear and feel more like 340s. lol

You guys are thinking too much. Buy tires that are 200+ and don't worry about it

Exactly. The rules are stated, whether or not the tire manufacturers are just blowing smoke is another matter. You have to buy 200+ TW tires, so just buy some and go race. lol

Talking to the people that run your autox program is probably the best solution. Before I left California I was part of the Steering Committee for the San Francisco Region. We decided to allow 140 TW tires for the first 6 months.
