Anyone know if you can tell how the bearing spun or lack of lubrication and oil starvation would of caused it?

Trying to figure it out.. so the bearing blows out as a defect and shreds goes everywhere. .

What signs to look for ?

How nice, on their 3rd revision for faulty valve control assemblies . . . so when should we all line up for the latest revision & will it be of any use ? Subaru is a real worry imo :/

I have a feeling that my engine had a similar failure today. It developed a rod knock.. Took it to a dealership and they said it will be replaced under warranty. Hopefully they don't come back to me with a reason that it cannot be replaced.

I was going to do my own oil changes, but reading this makes me think it would be better to have my dealer do it so there's no way they can say I didn't do proper maintenance.

If my engines start popping left and right I'm sending the car to Amemiya-san and having him jam a 13B in the damned thing. If I'm going to have a bitchy engine it's going to be a rotary.

No issues before this happened, other than tail light condensation.

Completely stock, hasn't been modified in any way.

Oil changes were done by the dealer (lifetime oil changes)

The rod knock started right when I came off a salt covered cloverleaf merging onto another highway. Never tracked or autocrossed. It is my daily commute to and from work, which is mostly highway. Occasionally "driven hard", but I'm not the type to bounce it off the rev limiter all day, or rev it when it hasn't fully warmed up yet. I can see no reason why this happened.

Talked to the dealership... Toyota/scion doesn't want to authorize the replacement due to a "lapse in the service history".

I did. I am also unsure what this means. The computer system shows a lapse in the service history from before I bought the car. I bought it used and was assured that any problems would still be covered under warranty for 60 months/60k miles from the date it was first sold.

wow, that's a load of BS they're feeding you by not fixing it. I wish you the best of luck in the battle to come.

I can forgive a manufacturer having growing pains with a new engine and/or car as long as they cover their customers. Throwing their customers under the bus by trying to blame them when the product fails, however, that's a serious breach.

Honda has been playing stupid games with a coworker of mine on his Fit Hybrid, five or six times now back in the shop for serious issues and the dealer has zero remorse. He has battered spouse syndrome now where he's starting to make excuses for the car saying "it's not that bad now." I'm angrier than he is. I would have reported it stolen, lit it on fire, aimed it at the dealer showroom and put a brick on the gas pedal and let it go. Knowing this car, though, it would have petered out halfway across the street.
