I hate to point it out, but it is English. That means it originated in ... England.... which is British. Granted a lot of it was borrowed from French, German and a few other western European languages.

If you don't like that, get your own ****ing language, stop basterdising ours.

I've probably owned and driven more british cars than you my friend. And currently still own a British bike. Besides.... our English here, I suspect, might be closer to your English than some of the dialects found in the U.K.

Plus, correct me if I'm wrong, but German would be the language of choice in the British Isles if not for us language robbing yanks.

No, it would probably be Russian!
(The 'Yanks actually had very little to do with preventing German from being spoken contrary to what your history lessons and Hollywood may tell you)

What was it like watching the Germans fly over the channel when you were a young boy?

Not much taught in history, I know and have known many WWII heroes who have told me plenty of stories. Great Britain lacked natural resources and man power to complete the job. They never had to deal with a land invasion, thanks to our presence and daylight bombing campaign. While the Brits are very resourceful and intelligent, WWII would have turned out quite differently had we not been there. Russia was not in the Europe conquering game at that moment as they had taken their share of WWII lumps too, Russian may eventually have been spoken. A certain presence in post war Germany also insured that was not the case too. Nice try though!

Yes I am sure your vets have some stories and they served valiantly but they would also have just a tad of bias in those stories and memories. It is a complete myth that the US came into Europe and saved the day for England. Things were pretty much a foregone conclusion before the US came out of isolation and participated in active confrontation.
The Russians would have finished it all on their own without any other help. The rest of the allies just sped the process up a bit.

Russia wasn't in the world conquering game? They certainly held onto a lot of land after the war. The fact that they held half of Germany for so long should be a good indication of what would have happened if they had finished things on their own though.
I was one of the "presence" in post war (way post but still Cold War)Germany and it may surprise you to know that there were many countries involved it that besides just the US.
The debate here is "Did the US save England single handedly" not "Did the US help prevent the USSR from taking over all of Europe" (which they did do).

I should know better than to participate in this debate since I have done it 1000 times and overcoming 60 years of US propaganda and myth is well beyond my ability to overcome with historical fact. So... I will not comment any more on the subject!

You win. Canadian text books have it all correct. Done hijacking thread here after one more rant. I was just trying to poke a little fun at a Brit. Truth is, the USA gave more in human and physical resources than any other two allies combined. The French and Belgians laid down, the polish fought, but with not much to fight with. Hell, even Norway was German occupied. England couldn't take the fight away from England. And the USA did tie up Germany which did aid Russua. Russia did well in Rusesa, but it would have been a different story else where. And they did occupy many Eastern European countries that Germany had easily defeated before Russia got there. The United States' manpower, manufacturing, resources beat the Nazis. Maybe you shouldn't believe your anti American text books after all. And if it wasn't for a little skirmish in the late 1700s where we took the English language, not borrowed it, Canada would sill belong to her majesty the queen if England. By the way, you and the rest of the world are quite welcome for the countless freedoms you enjoy- complements if the U S of A!
