Jacques has done 1m12.8 in RGM's 86 at the Z and sub 2 mins at Kyalami

As I spend more time on racetracks, the more I respect racecar drivers' skills.
The uninitiated always talk about how fast the car is, but the driver is the key.
A good driver makes a slow car fast, and a so-so driver makes a fast car slow.

A year ago I thought 1m30 at Midvaal was quite quick.
Now I can do 1m20, and I believe that I'll get down into the 1m17s with newer tyres, more practice and bigger goolies

Just curious, how badly does a track punish your tyres?

When you first start tracking it's not bad, but as you gain confidence and get faster, then you get harder on tyres and brake pads.

If you're interested to find out more, then I suggest that you go to Zwartkops for the next Super Trax day (15 March) and see what a track day's all about. It costs nothing to get in and you'll find folks are very willing to talk to you, especially other 86'ers, and you could probably cadge a ride as a passenger too.

If you want to go for it, then they have a novice group and instructors to help you. Costs R430 for the day. http://www.zwartkops.co.za/event/sup...stance_id=6421

Another option is the skidpan at Zwartkops, also on Super Trax days.
Great fun and gentle on tyres. Costs R180 for the day.

Here's what tyres look like after they've been pushed hard on track.
They basically melt, and anything will stick to them - ha-ha!!
