Maybe if Honda has fixed their quality slide over the past decade I'll pick one up in 25 years for my hypothetical kid.

this'll be fun. The Mugen Civic SI was over-priced, and that just had some body kit slapped on it.

I laugh every time I see somebody dismiss a car simply cause it's FWD, yet they'll go all fanboy over an R34 GTR, FD RX7 or NSX. I bet those same people have no idea that all three of those cars got dusted off in a time attack at Suzuka Circuit by a Civic Type R sedan by nearly 5 seconds (all cars 100% stock). Not like people drive their cars hard enough on the street to even feel the difference between a FWD or RWD car.
Since I'm my own person and am capable of thinking for myself and not just saying what everybody else says: I'm actually kind of bummed about the turbo vtec talk. I always thought that the high revving N/A character suited the cars really well. I'd rather see a 8.5-9k redline and drop a tad bit of weight its gained over the years on the new car rather than a turbo setup.

Yup RWD superiority is about as smart a position as 'cars get you laid'. Sure many enthusiasts can tell the difference and actually make use of it, most do not. For me there are many cars I'd rather spend money on than this hypothetical Honda, especially since after seeing how Toyota handles the warranties on the FR-S I have no desire to spend money 'because warranty' ever again. |

I'm talking about perfectly normal driving conditions. You're going to tell me that fwd feels like absolute shit when you're cruising down the highway or making a right hand turn at an intersection after coming to a stop? Whatever helps you sleep at night. Capabilities? Possibilities are nearly endless with any car, provided you have the pockets deep enough for it. Be real Yes there are noticeable differences between the two drive layouts but it's comical that people can only say "fail wheel drive" or "wrong wheel drive" in the same sense that people can only say "haters gonna hate".

Hell a moped is ok just putting around. That's not what we are talking about and you know it. FWD can be driven hard and well, I've run a few that have performed well, but the fact remains that the choice of FWD has never been FOR performance. It's cheaper and easier to package.
Now, of course, it can perform DESPITE being FWD, but some people choose not to entertain that compromise. Feeling the front end jerk violently dropping the clutch, having it understeer to the outside, knowing your traction bank account is 100% on the front wheels is not fun. My wife's Mini is FWD and it's a capable little car, it's great for what we use it for, getting around. My car, however, will be ridden hard and I demand RWD for that reason. |

there are a few best motoring vids where fwd wins at the end of the day. One with built crx all motor/wing beating the whole field of cars because it was so light /wing / acceleration /tire:weight:hp ratio. Another one was the usa battle at some track in California where a eg(1992-1995 hatch) with k20 won(by vote).

I never said it was the better performing layout. FWD isn't the ideal layout and that's common knowledge. What I said was: I LAUGH WHEN PEOPLE DISMISS A CAR ALTOGETHER SIMPLY BECAUSE IT IS FWD. That's it. Civic type R. "FWD. Fail", yet it destroys some pretty highly sought after performance cars around the track. Focus ST. "FWD. Fail", yet it bested the Subaru WRX and FRS around the track. The list goes on and on. I have not once said that fwd is better. I'm saying it's pretty damn ignorant to simply blow off a car cause it's front wheel drive. The sub 30k price tag market has some pretty good bang for buck vehicles that are FWD. Would I buy one? Probably not (already own an ST), but I can appreciate a good car, regardless of the make or drive layout. As far as modifications go, that's apples to oranges. Anything is possible with enough money. You can say front wheel drive sucks cause an integra will never be able to hold a slide like an FRS with rear wheel drive. Ok, I'm the same aspect; the FRS sucks cause it will never be able to launch like an all wheel drive GTR.

Well, dismissing things depends upon the true utility of the item as it relates to how it will be used. It's like when people blast the twins for not having enough power. Their use profile may truly demand more power. If that is the case their desire for more is justified. However, if somebody who just putts around all day starts talking like that then it's getting stupid.
I don't like the way FWD behaves under strain and I routinely strain the things I drive. For me FWD is a compromise that I am not willing to invest in. I know people who really dig the way FWD behaves and there is a way to drive it that can really make the platform perform. I'll never question their love of their preferred weapon because it works for them. More of a philosophical rub, though, the turbo. Honda, in my mind, is always going to be about tasty NA engines screaming for blood. I love turbo, but if I had a Honda I would want a nasty little NA motor. That's why my dream Honda is an S2000 or an NSX. |
