I'm pretty sure smartphones do similar things. Nothing beats real conversation.

I have a Samsung Smart TV and they can collect all the data from me saying "Volume up" they want. I don't generally sit here reciting my credit card numbers and pins.

Now, let's use the same logic but with different words:

Governments and/or Corporations (especially Corporations that are friendly with our government as well as other governments) can collect all the data they want from me because hey, I've got nothing important to share and I'm not breaking the law...

Tcoat, let me get all the voice data your Samsung TV collects and gives to 3rd parties and I'll take it and post it here online. You will find out really quickly how valuable (or damaging) that "data" is to your personhood. This data could easily get people unelected or removed from a prominent job for example. It's not just what you say about yourself either, it's also what you say about others or what guests in your house may say. The biggest concern here is: 3rd party. That's the part of greatest concern.

Ah but see I am not a government official, spy or in any other form of sensitive position. If anybody can do damage with the inspiring conversations I have with my wife or cats all the power to them. I don't think that asking the cat if he wants the green ball or red mouse in going to topple governments.
Now obviously anybody whose conversations could cause issues need to take precautions but I highly doubt any government has the resources to monitor the data from millions of devices to see if info is of value.
I can turn the voice command off in about3 .2 seconds by pushing button 3 times if I feel I am being compromised at any time.

Maybe it is the Canadian coming through but I fail to see a conspiracy in every possible situation.

Something that I find a little interesting and controversial is that some people are concerned about government snooping and invasion of privacy and yet the same people gladly hand over their life to FaceBook and Google without second thought. I am suggesting that it is business more than government doing the majority of data collection.

As I don't have a FB account (and DuckDuckGo is my default search engine) this does not concern me but I find their self censorship policy interesting. That is, they collect messages as you type even if you decide not to post them.

I still call shenanigans. I don't think Canadians read Orwell's 1984 and thought, "Now that's a world I could see myself living in!"

Just because YOU have nothing to hide, doesn't mean THEY have the right to be listening/watching/following YOU or ALL OF US for that matter. Once we grant "them" (whomever that is) the right to mass surveillance and total, unequivocal rights to our privacy there will be no going back. It's not a conspiracy at all.

Maybe it is a Canadian thing but I like to believe that just because I'm not using my rights, right now, doesn't grant permission for them to be taken from me, willfully or otherwise.

I think the problem is that we as Canadians see everything happening in the US with phonetapping, invasion of privacy, drones taking over the skies, Eric Snowden etc. etc. and we think 'hey its happening to them but not us' so we're oblivious to things happening here because they aren't widely reported on...then again all goes back to the government and media propagating what they want the masses to believe is 'true'

Anything with voice recognition will do this.

Main difference is that Google and Apple send your conversations to themselves, rather than to a third party. Samsung sends to third party because voice recognition isnt something they're good at.

This is why Siri and Google Now voice recognition dont work with internet off sometimes.

Oh they may happen here as well! The difference is that I just don't care. There is no way that any of it will harm me personally and if the people it does out at risk are dumb enough to not take some basic precautions then that is their problem.

That article, like much of the US media, is pure scare tactics.

It's not some giant government conspiracy to spy on you, it's a TV trying to understand your voice commands.
