First off, the social structure on this (and any) forum is far from "simple". Where in the past could you possibly get such a diverse group of people as we have here all with a common interest and all in the same place? It is that very mix that can cause some great interaction and horrid conflict occurring simultaneously. Consider the number of times that even the differences between your European culture and my own Canadian/quasi American culture have raised questions or issues. This same confusion can even manifest itself across regional and socioeconomic status.
Not all the users come here with the same agenda and sometimes those differences also create conflict. For myself I am here primarily to gain information and enjoy the social aspects and camaraderie that comes with the jokes and banter. When somebody that is only interested in asking(or answering, but more on that later) questions come across my jokes or feel I have "ruined the forum" because I am not following their standard then we end up in conflict. I on the other hand have little tolerance for the people that like to spew "facts" with no real data or hard facts to back up what they state. Again causing conflict. These different outlooks will always be there and all the "let's all just get along " guys are just barking at the moon.

There are several people on here that have said outright that they are very introverted in person. They may not seem that way here as they are pretty active but in the real world they can have great difficulty interacting with others. Of course the reverse can also happen and they could be very out going in reality but become confused or intimidated on here. It is these personality traits that tend to dictate how people react to comments on here. Yes, SquadRogue has asked some strange questions but he is not alone and in reality he has not even asked the dumbest. I have seen some really just plain stupid stuff come from some of the people I truly respect on here (and some others that I am not so fond of)and it is how they react that can determine how they are viewed by the rest of us. The extrovert will at least discuss the answers in some manner be it arguing, clarifying, or flat out denial of the answers and by doing that will at least garner support from some like minded individuals (even if it is just one person). The introvert may just clam up and say nothing or panic and give inappropriate (to the majority) answers with not only does not gain them support but makes them look even more a fool. We have a young product development engineer at work who is absolutely brilliant. He can usually tell you the specs (within a few thousands of an inch) of a part by taking a simple 5 second glance at it. To talk to this guy you would think he was a blithering idiot. He once stood staring in front of his car for an hour and when I went to ask him what was up he said he was trying to figure out how to clip on the new bug deflector he had bought. In any type of social setting he just completely falls apart and when we have our process review meetings I have to speak to him separately to get the info I need as he just can not talk coherently when there is a large group.

So that is my thesis on the subject and for right or wrong I stand by it!

TLDR - We are all different and some people are just not made to interact on the internet.
Well argued, well written and very interesting. And I agree with you.
The point I failed to make earlier was that living in San Francisco must involve more immediate and demanding social challenges than interacting on this forum. And yes, I've spent time in San Francisco and I know it's a lovely city, but I maintain my view.

So much this. I always get annoyed when I see something like this:

Person 1: It's the torque that accelerates the car
Person 2: It's the power that accelerates the car
Person 3: <Explains actual fact>
<Giant fight ensues>
Person 4: "Let's agree that we have different opinions on this"

Here, Person 4 is the actual idiot.

I totally agree. There is no room for different opinions when it comes to Newton's second law and other proven facts.
And there's no excuse for ignorance when the internet is ready to provide heaps of useful information, such as

Again an assumption is made based upon personal experience and perspective. You and I have traveled the world and seen many different places and it is natural for us to presume others have as well. In reality many people never leave their own city or even immediate neighbourhood their entire life. To you or me these places are new and interesting to them it is just the same old place all the time. If you have never left that same group of friends and family your idiosyncrasies may just not be noticed since that is just the way you have always been. When removed from that common ground and group of peers they become a glaring beacon of oddity.

Oh don't worry it won't last long!
Actually sort of funny that a joke thread got derailed by a serious side topic.

In the light of fighting an argument with facts, and those too ignorant to refute them other than 'you're stupid' or just 'no' I find it quite irritating and meaningless. Like arguing with a bunch of monkeys.

Damn it I just came up with a better math pun. they always come at me at the worst times. I guess this is a sine I need to take a break for a while, before I go off on a tangent.

Don't worry, we'll allow entropy to take over this thread again.
After all, we're all governed by the second law of thermodynamics.

See, you are not obtuse to the degree you thought! I knew you could come up with an angle!
