Okay potentially really stupid question. How much of a negative effect would running 17's up front with 16's in the rear be? I have a few sets of 16's from my old WRX wagon that are just laying around, and I have 17x9 RPF1's as my current wheels. I only want to use the 16's as rear drift spares. I know it will offset the balance of the car a bit, but is it worth it for a first timer?

It won't be an issue at all for just rear spares. Tires will be cheaper also.

1 please tell me ur stick shift, if so put it in first or second depending on speed in a big empty parking lot after a good rain. Punch it turn the wheel and try to maintaine the cookie. Then try to swap directions and do figure 8s. U need to learn what a slide feels like and how throttle/ steering input affects the slide. After that u can begin trying to slide around cones ect. Do not try to drift on streets or around buildings/cars ect. Once u feel comfortable, try to find a track that hosts drift events and get some real seat time.

Honestly I learned a ton from watching videos on youtube and just going out to empty lots and trying what I saw. Once you get a "feel" for the balance of the car during a slide it's all just learning to adjust throttle/clutch kicks to keep the car sideways. One way I practiced a lot was I would do super wide circles, and just see how many times I could go around while keeping the slide. I would start there, go both directions and get a good feel for being sideways. Then move on to figure 8's.

Another tip: drifting in second can be hard if you aren't comfortable with it, because of the wheel speed. Especially if you're just doing wide circles, first is a safe bet because you'll have enough torque to keep the wheels turning without clutch kicking. Good luck and have fun!
