OT: I went to northern PA over the weekend to visit my girlfriend. Saturday morning we were eating breakfast in a busy little cafe in town. We were seated near the windows and I could see my car parked just outside on the street. A middle aged couple came in and the husband was making it a point to take a look at "that cool little blue car over there" once he got inside.

By this point he was standing next to our table and his wife was trying to reign him back to the waiting area. He was saying something along the lines of "wow what is that?" and I told him it was mine, a Subaru BRZ. The usual question ensued (AWD? No. Does it go well in snow? Kinda. etc).

Kind of neat to see how even the "muscle car" generation swoons over these cars.
Ummmm..thanks???

Around here it is the "muscle car generation" (which includes me BTW) and little kids that I have had the best reactions from. I have had the exact same scenario you described occur many times now and still get amused by the reactions.

We have a cottage at a park and the day after I got the car I was driving up to the road when this mass of about 20 kids (10 to 12 years old) comes walking up from the other direction.
They just stop and start pointing, get all excited and start jabbering to each other.
My 12 year old grandson swaggers out of the middle of the pack (about 6 boys and 24 girls lucky little bastard in a couple more years) walks up says "Hi Grampa" loud enough for the rest to hear and struts off as the new king of the park kids!

That's pretty awesome, I wish my grandparents were cool enough to have cars like these. Although my grandpa did build an electric car so that's kinda cool.
