Proper BRZ sound

Hello friends,

Simple question: Is it possible to possess this sound without spending $4k on a turbo kit?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbqC1B-thBY

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

This is a good alternative.

Simple answer, yes. The turbo is not what you're hearing there, all a turbo does to the exhaust note is acts as a muffler. The turbo also makes a whistling noise when accelerating (more in front of the car than behind) and a whooshing noise when you let off the gas if the person has installed a blow off/diverter valve.

The "proper" sound you are referring to I believe is the lumpy nature of old school Subarus, and that is a result of using Unequal Length Headers. The person in the video you linked to doesn't seem to know what is installed, he claims in the intro he has a "Top Speed Auto over pipe" and a "Top Speed Auto cat-less over pipe". You can't have both, and judging from the sound I think he meant to say something along the lines of "Top Speed Auto UEL Header" in there.

Do some research on Unequal Length Headers or UELs, they have their pros and cons over Equal Length Headers. (similar to what comes stock on our cars) I prefer UEL for the added torque and sound, but they're not ideal for turbo setups or squeezing out every last horsepower in general. Here's a video of my setup with just a Tomei UEL and Invidia Cat-back exhaust...still running the factory over pipe with catalytic converter so it's a bit quieter than the fully open, non-cat exhaust in your video link. All of the sound in this video is directly from my car. Be sure to let it play to the end for the drive-by clip/sound.

Sorry to jack the thread, but did you get the UEL before the CBE? If so, was the rumble noticeable with just the stock exhaust? Also, beautiful sounding car.

Thanks!

Thank you! (Thread is a wrap I believe, so safe to move the conversation along. )

No, I put the Invidia CBE on first, drove it around for about a week...sounded nice but no rumble of course, then I had the header wrapped and installed, car dyno tuned. Judging by the small increase in sound from running just the Invidia CBE in place of the stock CBE, I would imagine it would be noticeable to run just the UEL header on the stock exhaust, but just not quite as loud as mine of course.

Here are a couple of videos with that setup:

I had my UEL before changing up the catback. As others have reported, it sounds weird. Hard to describe. Videos make it sound way better- in person, not so much. More tractor-like than anything

Thank you guys for the information. I want something more than the current quiet exhaust note but I'm trying to stay conservative. I had headers and a CBE on my old car and the noise level/drone was horrible.

When I get home I have an audio clip (no video, but decent quality stereo audio) from my car on a cold start and some revs with just a UEL. It is louder than stock and has some rumble, but not a lot.

If you wouldn't mind putting that up I'll greatly appreciate it.

Q300 setup is right up your alley. No matter what combination you use on your front half exhaust, it still stays quiet. Even a full catless setup isn't that loud unless you absolutely floor it.

Probably the most conservative setup for this car.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm planning to stick to just UEL, drop in, and OFT. I'm trying to avoid the slippery slope of tuning/modding a car, I've spent way too much money before chasing for every last bit of HP/Torque and weight reduction. Just trying to keep things short and simple, but I have a feeling/fear that the modding bug has taken a hold.

**Warning: I have no idea how loud this will be on your side. I use headphones that are obnoxiously loud so my volume is never above 10%, I hope this is not too loud or too low**

Here it is chopped down to about 1 min:

This was recorded with a Tascam DR-05 that was sitting on the ground about 6-7' from the car.

At the time of this recording the car just had a RevWorks UEL, K&N filter, and OFT Stg. 2 91oct map.

You will hear a full cold start, then a where it mellows out at idle, and then a cut to 3 short revs of increasing intensity.

The cold start sounds a bit nasty, but after it is warmed up it is not bad. Definitely not as nice as an aftermarket exhaust system. My current system sounds much deeper and nicer overall, but is considerably louder.

Thank you so very much for that sound clip. I really appreciate your help! It worries me a bit that the cold start is that loud but IIRC, a little tweaking with the tune file in OFT should somewhat reduce that loud cold start right? I need to do more research in which UEL to purchase, if I were to forge ahead with the decision. Once again, thank you!
