By the way, interesting (at least to me) that this crash had a similar cause to the Concorde, debris puncturing a wing tank resulting in fire. The difference here is the SR-71 committed suicide by providing its own part where as the Concorde picked it up off the runway.

Watching a CF-116 Freedom Fighter take off in Germany and all of a sudden he aborted and just barely kept the plane on the runway. When we went to tow it back there was a huge hole just aft of the nose wheel well. Apparently he had kicked up a 3" piece of pipe (of undetermined origin) and flung it through the fuselage just in front of his feet. Messed up the avionics big time but a foot to either side could have been much worse. I have a picture of it someplace (would have went to jail back then if they knew).

Yea, I read aircraft accident reports on occasion and see this more often than you would think, as you said. Of course, in this case it punctured a titanium skin!

Ya, no titanium in the Freedom Fighter! They are sort of the FRS of the sky, inexpensive, not all that fast, highly maneuverable and used by countries that could not afford the "better" planes!

I was referring to the SR-71 (but you may have known that), but didn't figure about the Freedom Fighter.
