This seems to be pretty popular in the s2k world and i'm surprised it hasn't been done on the FRS/BRZ's since the issue with turbo and under hood temps seem to be a problem. I've looked around the forum but have found nothing similar. I think carbon hood are pretty expensive and dont think there's much weight difference between the oem and aftermarket hoods to justify the price. Any taker, diy'ers? Doesn't have to be the same, similar.. but the idea is to vent the stock hood.

I've been looking pretty heavily into this myself...theres a huge DIY on the s2k forum
although I've been searching for a cf vent that I could use after I cut a hole in the stock hood, and drop in the vent... I just don't know about my skills of cutting a hole in the hood and making the edges look to clean, hence my desire for a "drop in" vent/cover |

That would be ideal as I have 0 skills in the cutting and making look neat dept. maybe someone could start producing these. I know there's a vendor here that makes a template for nostrils.

Have you considered just getting this ( http://www.ft86speedfactory.com/rksp...hood-1496.html ) if you're not comfortable with cutting into your hood? I mean, it's pricey but you're paying for the piece of mind and looks OEM-ish.

You need air flow.. just adding a vent to our hood isn't going to do much of anything for the heat problems.

I saw the hood scoop but I always thought that was more for getting air in like the wrx and sti's have. I mentioned the vents because these would allow to vent heat while standing still and allow the high pressure on the hood to extract heat at high speeds.

Ah! Gotcha. Thanks for clearing that up. But wouldn't that scope with added vents near the rear/window provide that? Sorry, if the question is ridiculous. |

Not quite. You have half of the equation. You have the exit for the air, but there isn't really a good entrance for cold air to come in and flow the hot air out.

Ideally you want a good entrance and a good exit. I think the car has a decent entrance already and this may work with stock under the hood temps but a bigger extractor is needed when extra heat is produced. I dont think we need to complicate ourlseves with racecar designs/componets and ideas since most of us just see street driving. I also think this would only benefit, if at all, those with turbocharged cars. I think i'll do some more searching around on the s2k forums as to how to stick the grill on the opening and jump on the task myself eventually. Just wondering what shape would look good around the center of the hood or where most turbo kit's turbine housing reside.

Couldn't quite find the thread but IIRC, someone did a comparison between the stock hood, wet carbon (i.e. fiberglass with carbon overlay), fiberglass and dry carbon and only dry carbon weighed less than the stock hood.
