I'm either going to tint the taillights for the smokey look or go red as well. Or I'll wait to see what the aftermarket will have to offer for different taillights or go for the custom route.

Yes, I realized my brain fart afterward. A red LED may very well have more intensity in the red regime than a white LED.

My line of reasoning is that amber lights are considered more safe and visible, so it's best to keep the amber. Tinting the outside would completely kill the light output.
Tinting the reflector would reduce the intensity of the reflected light significantly but at least you can still sorta see it. I think it might be a good idea to perhaps replace the amber bulb (looks to be a normal incandescent) with an array of amber LEDs aimed in slightly different directions for visibility, or to keep the amber bulb and add amber LEDs around it. |

I'd like to see "Joey Mod" style with the taillights' chrome stripped and painted flat black or body color....obviously leaving the bulb reflector portions intact for light functionality. The chrome isn't doing it for me.

I'd go with the film. That way if you don't like it you can always peel it off and you have a brand new looking set of lights.

I don't know my toyotas / subbies too well, but do they change things like tail lights within a year like some companies do (as a part of a minor facelift, etc.)?

Here's a quick photoshop I did on an FR-S with red tinted taillights:
![]() I also removed the FR-S badge. This is essentially what the back of my car will look like! |

That above chop doesn't look to bad, but I don't think the taillights look bad at all.
They are 1,000,000 times better than the WRX hatch tails, and about 250,000 times better than the JP/Euro 86 tails. To each their own, I guess. |

What's wrong with that? Since I'm going with CBS I'll consider smoking the taillights as one of my options.
