Yea. We do cross-shopping every few weeks and we called 4 dealers in the LA region that still thought the FR-S was a concept only... seeing that it was officially announced on 11/30/2011, we couldn't help but laugh.

Based on your screen name here, I'm assuming your initials are E.K.

Why are you upset? You said you didn't want the white one. I doubt the person buying it wants you to come test drive it while they are filling out the paperwork.

Once upon a time, there was a concept car called the Pontiac Solstice, and I drank the Pontiac Solstice kool-aid, and all I wanted was one. While waiting some 2 years for it to come to market, I posted endlessly on message boards, scouring the interwebs for the latest little hint of news, spy photos and previews. Meanwhile, I called every Pontiac dealer in my area to see who seemed to have the most information and wanted me to throw money at them for a deposit. Finally found one who claimed to be getting the biggest initial allocation, based on prior sales, and that I'd be 5th or so on the list, able to customize the car to my choosing. In writing, I would be getting my car @ MSRP.

Then the TV show "The Apprentice" featured the Solstice heavily. I think it was part of the grand prize for the first season, and the contestants had to design some marketing for it. So public interest in the car BLEW UP OVERNIGHT. Shortly thereafter, I get an email from the dealership stating that they were cancelling all the orders - some 26 or so cars.

"We are no longer accommodating preorders on the Pontiac Solstice."

Further inquiry revealed the reason why - They planned to sell my car (and all the others) to the highest bidder. They literally invited bidding wars on those initial cars, and marked up later allocations somewhere between 5K to 10k more. I even had to fight to get my REFUNDABLE deposit back.

In hindsight - at least I avoided owning a Pontiac Solstice.

/my rant over
And look how well that strategy worked out for them in the long term. Hopefully Subaru and Scion will not repeat this mistake.

Not much good comes from being the first to buy a new desireable car. Dealers will try to screw you any way they can.

Off topic, but I really really wanted a Solstice when they first came out. Like the BRZ/86, many people (including Keiichi Tsuchiya) preferred it to the MX-5. Last year I sat in a GXP and found I couldn't fit, so I was glad that I couldn't afford them when they were new anyway They were a good car, and a breath of fresh air for GM; I'm really surprised they didn't continue that RWD platform in a Chevrolet version after all the R&D they did over the years!

Yep... crazy what having around $80K in cash would do to someone

If you read my post, it wasn't the fact that they sold the car, obviously, I think the person who wants the car deserves it, but the fact that he called me, and didn't even think he should call me back and tell me not to come upset me. I live an hour away. Also, what I meant to say was, NOT that I didn't want the white one, I told him, "I would prefer red or black". So I didn't explicitly say, I won't take a white one, even if you have one. I said call me as soon as you get one, so I can drive it.

Well, he didn't say it was a for sale/customer car. Most of the cars coming in right now are first86 OR demo cars. He made it seem like it was a demo car, as NONE of the dealerships are allowing test drives for cars coming in right now.

Ain't that the truth. Even with Scion Pure Pricing and my (hopefully) $1000 for graduating from college... I'm still a little worried.

$80000 cash, graduating from college. Not sure if older or trust fund baby. Regardless, that's cool. My dad buys his cars cash, but couldn't get our local Porsche dealer to budge on their pricing model (over MSRP) and I haven't been able to interest him in a GT-R.

That's why you shop around, it don't matter if you have cash or credit. A sale is a sale. Paying full cash for a car is crazy since it will depreciate like crazy in the first 2 years. But to each their own. That $80k in cash can be used to buy some Apple or Facebook stock! LOL! And maybe double the $80k in less than a year!

There are porsche dealers that sell for less than MSRP on all their car even the 911 turbo, but most rich folks don't car about price...

Sorry, not literally CASH CASH, I meant with our own loans / a big down / etc. Basically, the dealer didn't have to do any work for us. I had a check from my bank, some cash, and a creditcard. Literally walked in and out in less than an hour. No hassle, no haggle, they heard my story of the other Stealership and wanted to earn my business on a car they had sitting on their lot.

p.s.,
Yes, my parents bought me the car. I'm being honest. How many 22 year olds can afford the car? I wasn't even done with school back then. I try not to be a brat about it, but I don't see the need to hide it either. I'm lucky and my parents are cool. =]

Let me get this straight. Your parents bought you a brand new GT-R out of college (which I don't have a problem with, if your family has the money for it then why not, if you're humble about it and realize how privileged you are) but you also have a Cobra... and you were at the top of a list for an FR-S while not wanting white, though the first FR-S to arrive was white which you have stated that you did not want but you wanted to test drive it anyway (and likely not in a manner that you'd want someone to have driven your car in before purchasing it), you're displeased with the fact that they sold it before you got to test drive it just because you were number one on the list (even though you had no intentions of buying it in white), but but you have a GT-R and a Cobra at home and still feel the need to rant about not having been able to test drive a car that has only been in dealerships for maybe a week at most? Come on, man.

These cars are comparable?

Wow, you need to chill out. What does me having other cars have to do with anything? Customer service should be there no matter what.

And like I've said probably 3 times now, I never once told the dealership that I would not buy a white. I merely told him I'd PREFER a red. What don't you get about that? AND, He made it seem like this was a TEST car for, I don't know, MAYBE TEST DRIVING? I have nice cars in the family, and I wouldn't flog the piss out of a car that I knew was going to another owner... and why would I out myself on the forums if I would? I have more courtesy than that.

And FYI, the car might have been released to the first86 in the last week, but TEST DRIVES and appearances have been happening for more than a month. I was invited to some of these and heard of others, but I was unable to view the car in person. So excuse me if I am excited about this car, I didn't realize that only non-GTR / Cobra owners are allowed to own this car, my mistake.
