How is it now.
it is not permitted to use snow tires with studs in the US?
Probably would not cope with a winter without snow tires with studs.
Bought me a set of Michelin X-Ice.

on my evo 8, I had Hankook W-419, and they were also really good.

It depends place to place but studs are only allowed at certain times of the year, they tear the shit out of roads if there isn't ice or snow and most people don't use them at all. The whole of Sweden is at a higher latitude than the States, though, so our winters are probably pretty mild compared to yours.

Studs are illegal in the Southern part of Ontario but legal in the north. This can make for some interesting problems for people traveling and I have actually seen the police checking tires on southbound highway rest stops.

Mind you it is a weird feeling when you scrape bottom on some snow that a couple of 100 cars already passed over and realize you are the lowest guy on the road at that point!
Hitting -2 F today so far (-19 C) and I can tell you that the worst problem I've had was a sluggish start (though it did start just fine).

And I believe I related this story elsewhere on this forum last year, but I drove over a relatively stiff pile of snow, heard a scrape, and saw red on the snow. I thought I had busted my differential, and I panicked and drove to the dealership. Turns out the snow had just scraped off some underbody rust and gunk, which looked like used diff fluid on the snow.

Oh, I never thought of that aspect! I bet I have the cleanest undercarriage in Ontario right now with all that nice pure snow rubbing underneath.
Snow on my road was over a foot deep and I left such precise trails through it that I can probably check my alignment from the marks!

Was joking with the "jerk" thing in reference to your comment "we'll just piss them off"

WHAT? I'm not a JERK ....now I'm disappointed. Snow makes great rally drivers. I wouldn't mind doing some ice racing...it looks like a blast!!!

It is a blast, when you do it on purpose!
Not so much fun when spinning down the center of a busy highway.
Used to have an old Datsun pickup (yes Datsun not Nissan) that would just break traction at apparently random times in any snow whatsoever. A deliberate 360 on ice is really fun but I never enjoyed those sudden 2880s one little bit!
