I've always thought those were dealer add-ons.

The recall is for a little under 4000 cars, but includes 4Runner, Tacoma, FJ Cruiser, Land Cruiser, RAV4, Scion FRS, and XB; the FR-S is one of the lowest-volume cars on that list. Maybe someone will actually get a recall letter?

EDIT: From the filing with NHTSA: "
During a routine audit, SET found that two accessory installers were not using a
supplied torque wrench to properly attach running boards and other accessories to
vehicles when the installation instructions specifically required a specific torque for
the attaching fasteners. If the fasteners are not properly tightened to the specified
torque, the fastener could come loose, possibly allowing the accessory to fall off the
vehicle, which could result in a crash or injury."

It's very possible that there is no real impact here then. It may just mean these two techs worked on a handful of the 86s prepping them. I suppose we could be misinterpreting "accessories". it could be items that are stowed for shipping and then attached at the dock before transport. For example, the front license plate frame is attached either by the dock or the dealer (probably not a good example since that is done at the dealer).

In any case, it sounds like its a minor issue.

It looks like the screwdriver torque "recall" is issued by the dealership. Because the dealership wants you to come in and buy another car.

Help wanted:
SET
We have an immediate need for two junior Accessory Installation Technicians.
Must be fully competent in the identification and operation of a torque wrench.

Yes, because "Wow we really fucked up and recalled your car" is a great sales leader and marketing technique!

Yea, same as the extended warranty sales pitch:

Salesman: Congratulations on your choice, you've picked one on the most reliable <name your device here> on the market.

Me: Thanks.

Salesman: Now, do you want the extended warranty because you know its going to fail the second the warranty ends and you will need it.

Me: Ugmm, maybe I just won't buy the product after all if it isn't expected to last <length of warranty> months without falling apart.

Salesman: But, it is reliable that just won't happen. Our failure rate is once in a blue moon.

Me: Exactly.

Wow! Almost word for word my conversation every single time somebody attempts to push an extended warranty on me.
On the other hand, my wife is the Finance Manager for an RV dealership and makes huge money on extended warranties so please always get one if you are buying an RV in St Thomas Ontario!

The port-installed accessories for the FR-S are mostly things like the spoiler, tint, bumper applique, and fog lights, none of which are particularly concerning. Now, if I had a Tacoma with running boards installed at the port...
