Darn early winter. Still have the stock tires on. I got tires but no rims as they sold the last set not long before I went to get them. Going with General Altimax Arctic. Was a good winter tire on my 2wd truck, should be good on the FRS. Why did they put darn 5x100`s. WHY!?!?!?

Do not put extra weight in the trunk - it is counterproductive. You will undo all the careful engineering Toyobaru made to concentrate weight low and to the center of the car. Adding weight outside of the center of mass pivot is actually increasing the tendency of the car to swing off path. If you must add weight do it low and in the center of the car, like on the rear or passenger floors.

Winter driving for me entails walking out to my car in short sleeves and shorts and driving like normal. #floridaFTW

If you decide to add weight, try to do it as far from the extreme ends of the car as possible.
Adding weight in the very rear of the trunk will increase polar inertia which will make the car tail happy and harder to pull back from a slide. 2X 100 lb bags of sand in the back seats might help, but I think it is an even trade off. Heavier car = harder to get moving and harder to stop |

If it gets to the point where I need chains my 3 1/2 inches of ground clearance means I am pretty much screwed anyway!
I understand that having chains at least available is a requirement in some areas of Canada but am also curious if anybody has ever had to actually use them.

When it gets to that point, you fire up the skidoo and tow your 86. Take full advantage of the underbody panels and light weight of the car. Just tow it like a sled over all the snow. If you go fast enough it'll rise up on the tires like a hydrofoil. |
