Congrats! The Hot Lava looks awesome! I was leaning toward that color but chose Firestorm manual instead. Dealer says mine should be here the 24th or 25th of May. In Portland right now and i am not a 1st 86.

That color was my first choice for a while, then I changed my mind and went for the white. Its good to see if my dealer were to tell me the white ones all sold out, I'd still be happy with my second choice! Nice, nice car man!

Driving impressions

So back from taking a 35 mile drive. Here's some impressions...

( Previous cars I've owned that I'm comparing it to include Miata, S2000, 911 (993), and Lexus 300GS ).

6th gear is not for passing (duh!) and has very little oomph. So a down shift to 5th is required. No big deal to me but some people may find it inconvenient. If you find it so, buy the automatic.

Going up a steep hill (20% or so grade), the car has pretty good power but what I did notice was that the sound of the exhaust is nothing to write home about. Doesn't have the notes that would make me go "ah". I kept it below 4K rpms so maybe when I can wind it up like an S2000, it will sound better and also get me up the hill faster.

That's it for now.

With manual transmission : indicated speed of 60mph is 2600 RPM, 70mph is 3000 RPM, and 80mph is 3450 RPM. That is better than I hoped in that I'm one of those guys that likes an overdrive 6th gear for good mileage and quiet interior at highway speed. 3K rpm at 70 I can live with so I'm no longer contemplating stepping to the 3.73 rear diff gearing.

Also re: the transmission. The throws are not quite as crisp as the S2000 nor Miata in that I didn't get a confirmation of when it was fully in the gate. Not quite as good as a Miata (perfect throws in my book) but maybe after I've got a couple of thousand miles on the tires, I'll think differently.

Getting on a freeway onramp, it doesn't have the pure acceleration of a 911 (thankfully as I really don't need to be doing 105 at the end of the ramp) nor does it have the quick wind up of the S2000 (but not a fair comparison as I'm keeping it below 4k). So I'll defer any judgement there until I'm done with breakin and can do it right.

Steering is great. I wouldn't want it any heavier. Cornering is awesome, lots of feedback so I know exactly how the front wheels are doing. The backend gets a bit squirrelly when accelerating out of a corner (which is good as that's what I wanted when I bought the car). Reminds me a lot of the Miata in that respect, very tossable.

The suspension certainly gives good road feel. Lots of it, esp in some construction zones I drove through. Nothing jarring but it's giving me second thoughts if I want anything harsher just for a slight drop.

Still struggling a bit to find a comfortable position for my left leg on that bolster but I think it could just be that it's been too long that I've sat in a car with such firm support. In that respect, a telescoping wheel would be nice in that it would give me more options for leg position. I still remain confident that I'll get that problem licked.

Standard radio works well, still butt ugly. Haven't tried bluetooth. The door sill is a bit high relative to the seat so I have to be real careful in getting my shoe over it to not mark it up.

There were 11 miles on it before we went to go gas up the car. The sales manager said that he drove it off the truck and back to the shop and then they parked it out front until i got there. According to him, no mechanic took it for a drive. A bit strange in that I though a mechanic always took it for a drive but I've no problem with it.

Awesome impressions. Being that you have driven the cars you listed. I feel even more confident that I have made the right choice in getting this car, and letting go of my 370z.

Wait till you break her in, and open her up a little. I'm so jelly.

Nice look man, the color reminds me of the Supra in the first fast n furious movie so with the body shape kind of resembling the Supra, I knew the lava color would look good on this car. This car is just the ultimate platform to modify as you please bringing me back in time while adding modern electronics. Love it.

I'm pretty sure it has a tilt and telescoping steering wheel. Double check dude.
