either the Sony or one of the Samsungs. in recent times, whenever I had compared tv's and the colors Samsung always seemed to have a better picture quality than the Sony, however the Sony is not too shabby and I would still recommend them but for me personally, Samsung would be number one.

I would say from 2003-04 when Sony had to "live off" Samsung for S-LCD Corporation.

In 2011, the company's partners announce that Samsung will acquire Sony's entire stake in the joint venture, making S-LCD Corporation a wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics.

Since my dad is gunning for a 4K UHD tv for after the superbowl, id suggest one of those, but thats heavily outside your price range. Hard to beat sony at their game, our current projector TV is a sony, and we've had that since we moved into our current house ~13 years ago. Still runnin strong. Our other is a panasonic plasma.

These are generally more bulky due to the extra layer of LEDs behind the display. Most modern LED TVs on the other hand use Edge-lit and the LEDs instead of being an extra layer are now placed on the sides of the display. That results in these LEDs being thinner than their predecessors.

If you want more info this article provides more in-depth info.
