Oh, that would be an awful lot of trouble. I hope we can avoid that.

Basically any shot that shows position of some feature on the tension arm relative to the alternator, or that idle pulley upstream of the alternator.

I know you have another idler pulley just downstream of the alternator but if you can get something, I'll take another picture of mine from the same angle.

I remember it was common on miatas with gates belts in general. The concensus was that American made belts used a very slightly different profile from the oem Japanese made belts. You might try figuring out who the oem supplier is and sourcing the correct length belt from them. Or as someone else suggested go with a slightly shorter belt to increase tension.

The sound I'm getting is a little different from normal belt squeal. Usually belt issues sound like "screeeeeeech". Mine goes "squeak-squeak-squeak-squeak...." from 2000rpm onwards and increases in tempo with higher revs/speed. It only happens when engine is stone cold and goes away after about 5-10mins driving.

Is it a rubbery sounding, or a more metallic sounding squeak?

And does its period seem to coincide with a revolution of the one of the pulleys, or the full belt itself?

Mine does this too when it's cold out. I eventually just said fuck it.

Not really sure how to describe it. Could be rubbery squeak. Kinda sounds like an old cheapo bicycle squeaking....lol.

If you have someone rev the engine, does the squeak match each time you see the belt label in the same place, or does it go faster than the belt?

Had a good look at it and the timing of the squeak coincides with the rotation of the belt, so I think the issue is belt related.

Funny thing is, when driving the squeak tempo is around 2-3 sps (squeaks per second) and increases with the engine rpm. But....if I lift off the throttle with clutch engaged the squeak tempo goes rapidfire-fast, almost similar to belt slipping sound (but without the constant "screeeech" sound).

If I lift off the throttle with clutch disengaged there is no squeak.

Here's a picture of the tensioner you requested....

Try getting a spray bottle and spray some water on belt, if the squeak goes (or gets rearly bad) you will know its the belt. If it does not change then its likely something else

Actually I think I might have a can of belt dressing somewhere in the shed...might give that a go. If the squeal stops after the spray, that would indicate belt problem/slippage.

Yeah, but then you end up with belt dressing everywhere. Blecch!

Or just buy a belt ($20ish), slap it on and if it goes away you know it's the belt. That's what I did and it was the belt for me. If not then you have an extra backup belt, which you probably want anyway.

Good tip...thanks. But mine is only couple of weeks old. Getting the same belt might end up slipping again. Do you think a new belt in one size smaller would fit better?

Current belt: Gates K061015 - 2593mm outside circumference
Next size down: Gates K061010 - 2581mm outside circumference

According to what I've read in this thread, there have been mixed results and I didn't want to take the risk. I ordered a mechanics stethoscope so perhaps you might was to try getting one as well to pin point the problem area. Got a supposed good one on amazon. If your belt is only a couple weeks old then odds are it's not the belt, unless water is getting in the engine bay, but not sure if that would do it if the belt got wet.
