I would not have guessed that. But sometimes you base sales off what you see. In Utah, FRS/BRZ are not a common site compared to a tC.

Can we just stop with dancing around semantics? We get it- it's a fun factor instead of utilitarian decision. Toy has connotations to cheap, not serious, play (could pertain to it).

NO I am sure I am right!
Actually of course it wasn't right. I made the cardinal sin of sending from my phone without checking first and I suck with the phone keys! Obviously hit one number wrong and missed one completely. Not as bad as the time I almost ordered 1000 cases of cotton swabs though!

Also, the whole more power thing, Toyota unfortunately learned that doesn't work well. Look at the demise of the Celica and Supra. While both were great cars, they priced out the people that wanted them by adding alot of features people said they wanted........or thats my opinion anyway since I dont know for sure lol.
According to the sales manager at my dealer the target demographics for these are actually the 18 to 25 year old single student/entry level professional and the 50+ "empty nesters" with some disposable income. The BRZ was supposed to be the "old guy" version but it really didn't play out that way in reality.

I totally agree with your opinion on the Celica as it started out as a very inexpensive car. The Supra on the other hand was never exactly cheap.

That always cracks me up. The number of students or recent grads without a buttload of student loans to pay down would doom this car for sure if it were not for the empty nesters that are buying these cars up. It is these guys that keep the sales up. Same as the target buyers for MX5s.

The Japanese must think all Americans are rich and pay for their kids education and buy them a new car upon graduation. Listen up Japan. It ain't so! Your target demographic is swimming in debt before they even enter the job market,

So the question is: Do you have another "family" car?
If yes, then the FRS may be a "toy".
If no, then it is not a toy just the family car. A really bad choice maybe, but still just the family car.
As a kid I grew up with a 64&1/2 Mustang as the family car. Also a really bad choice but that was what we had.
Mine is not a "toy" either. In fact it is a vital tool in my work and I trust it to get things done for me and it does that job way better then any car I have had before.
Now...when only driven on weekends, in perfect weather, tracked exclusively or, like I said when I started, as a second car then sure it is a "toy".
A lot of people give them a status that seems to put them out of the practical realm but really, when used as a DD, they are just a car.

Yup, we have a 2014 RAV4 Limited that we generally drive the family around. My wife's toy is a 2005 MINI Cooper S (w/ LSD!)

It was made pretty clear at the First86 event in Long Beach that the market for this car was NOT the 18 to 24 year olds. First, I would say the median age of the group in attendance was well north of 30, maybe even 40. Second, we received a preview of the intro commercial and as part of that they addressed the "youth brand" and explained that their goal was for Scion to have a lower median age by appealing to those that were "young at heart". They wanted Scion's median age to be 10 years less than Toyota's, which still put it in the 40's. (Average age in the US right now is 52 for all cars, see chart below a little outdated but probably still accurate if it hasn't moved further right).

Yes, there is a need to "get 'em while they are young" to create brand loyalty, but that only works if you have cars to move up to, which there isn't with 86, at least not yet.

I'm not sure I understand the 2 door vs 4 door analogy. I mean, I understand your intent, but I have had lots of 2 door cars raising a family of 5. Again, it all depends on your "mission". If you mean a two door econobox, or even an 86, sure I get that. But a Chevette with 4 doors, or a FR-S with 4 doors is really no more practical than if it had 2. I can think of lots of two door cars though that are perfectly fine family cars (and a ton of trucks for that matter).

Back in the day, there were lots of families that bought the car they could afford, regardless of its convenience. In fact, my family once took a 500 mile trip in a 60's VW Bug with two adult women, a 14 year old, a 12 year old, a 9 year old, an infant and a German Shepard. Of course we didn't have to worry about silly safety rules then!

Remember like yesterday a trip from Ontario to Newfoundland (over2000miles) in about 1970. We took the old Mustang which only had about 20% of the floor left and an exhaust system consisting of soup cans and coat hangers..
Dad's instructions to my two sisters and I were "keep your feet up" and "don't fall asleep"!

My grandmother had a '69 Corvair that was exactly like that.....
