I spent ~3 hours when shopping for my FR-S at a dealership when the guy tried to get me in a 535i instead. I let him run his game, call all his managers, then walked out after 3 hours. It was hilarious.

I think that if you are talking to a salesman, just be straight up with him that you are just toying with the idea and not necessarily looking to buy. At least you are saying that if a more prospective buyer comes in, don't waste a better opportunity for a sale. Then the onus is on the salesman how much time he invests.

And I for one don't really understand why. He went into a dealership to test drive a car he had some interest in buying and to find out what kind of deal he could get. The deal wasn't good enough, so he walked. That happens every day.

These people saying he shouldn't have visited the dealer if he wasn't 100% ready to buy aren't making any sense. How is he supposed to know if he wants the car if he doesn't test drive it? How is he supposed to know what kind of deal he can get if he doesn't ask? How is he supposed to know which car he wants to buy if he doesn't test drive and ask about all that he's interested in? If there are five cars he's interested in, is he expected to buy all five of them or not bother the salesmen? I suppose the people criticizing him must have just bought the first car they test drove and took the first deal offered to them without shopping around.

A good salesman isn't going to mind taking the time to talk with this guy and let him get to know the car. They can't know who is ready to pull the trigger and who isn't, so they're going to cast the net wide and accept that most of the people who walk onto the lot are not going to buy. But if OP does decide to buy, that salesman has already started a relationship, and it will be worth that hour if OP comes back later and wants to negotiate.

^^^ I think most people are poking fun because he thought his 10 series would be worth more at the dealership, and also the fact it kinda seems like OP not even in the market for that Lexus but just wanted to check it out. But maybe he is what do I know

I didn't get the sense that he was just there for a joyride, but that he had at least enough interest in the car to listen to the numbers. Why the hell would anybody stick around after a test drive just to hear a salesman talk?

As for the trade-in value, yes, that sounds about right, and he does seem to have a higher opinion of his car than reality would suggest. But on the other hand, that interest rate that was quoted was ridiculous. I would have laughed at the guy also.
