Heres what bugs me about this whole ordeal. The FT86 is said to be sold onto the global market completely by mid-late 2012. While scion still remains a North American sub-corporation of Toyota only, and has not announced that they will be going international. Why would Scion offer the FT86 internationally especially when Scion is only able to crank out less than 2500 units of each line up. Even if Scion is TECHNICALLY Toyota, they are still their own company, and as such probably wouldn't be able to offer the FT86 as to where they stand now, they are still a relatively new corporation.
So whats with all this rumors and press releases and such? Even with my very limited knowlege of business, shares, and partners. In my head this just not make sense. Im 100% positive that the FT86 will not be sold as a Scion as they have no where near the capacity to maintain a large order, especially since it will indefinitely replace the already high sales of its current coupe the TC which still has 2-3 more years of shelf life.

scion Xb is being sold as a toyota rukus here in australia.. point is if the ft86 comes as a scion in north america... well tough, it wont come out as such here in australia OR japan (which is going to more than likely be the primary market..)
looks like there will be a whole bunch of rebadging.. but as matador and wings said... toyota isnt that dumb.. this is just retarded hearsay

outside of the states they do. But of course, all cars have a higher MSRP in Canada, so its not much of an argument lol.
But just so everyone knows, the tC starts at $20,850 in Canada. And if I wanted a Scion I'd have to drive for 12 hours to find a dealer. They aren't common place here, only in major population Centers. " Please note that initial launch dealers are in greater Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver with more to come in early 2011." |

I use to worry that the ft-86 would be released as a scion but, after awhile of thinking it through i really don't care if it does or doesn't as long as it looks almost identical to the concept and has the performance specs that it needs to make this car fun to drive.
I'm from canada so i don't know all the stigma behind owning a scion vehicle but, i do know that it's targeted towards the generation y crowd and it's current lineup look like cars that only oompa loompas would drive....i dunno maybe a halo car for scion?? |

I work at a prominent Toyota / Scion dealership so I am familiar with Scion. Some of the above comments are incorrect. Scion sells way more than 2500 units. They make 2500 of the "Release Series" each year. Also, they can sell a vehicle for whatever they want. Toyota has always been a company of change, if they had an initial idea of not wanting to go over a $20,000 MSRP.....that idea is obviously gone now. The idea that Scion is too small to handle the production is crazy too. Scion is not a seperate company. The vehicles are built in the same production facilities as Toyotas in Japan. On the Titles of the vehicles they are even titled as Toyotas. The reason I am upset they are releasing it as a scion is one: I can't buy it for "cost." Secondly I'm affraid that they will cheapen it up if it is a Scion. Third, I think people will perceive it different and not praise it as much as if it was a Toyota. Maybe if everyone complains that it is being labeled as a Scion they will release it as a Toyota. The thing that gets me is all the pictures have Toyota emblems on the FT86.

The way I see it: Scion - Cheap/Low-budget Toyota - Mid-range Lexus - Luxury/High-budget. Which would put the FT86 in Scion because of the price, but the fact that it has always been labeled/branded as a Toyota, I'm not sure. I'm sure this car will be marketed almost everywhere, so I can't see it being labeled a Scion just because of that reason. There is no such thing as Scion here in NZ, the xB (I think) is sold here as the Toyota xB, or BB (or something like that), and I don't think there is anything here that is the equivalent of the Genesis, so this car will be the first sporty car in a long while for us here.. The last one would have been the MR-S (MR2).

I could give a fuck about the stigma, there are lots of reasons why it would be dumb to make it a scion.
Then again come to think about it, yeah... lots of fucktards driving scions (no offense to the scion guys on here), who don't really care about what the FT-86 would offer. No thanks. |

This is my first post so it saddens me that I have some more evidence regarding our beloved FT-86 being badged as a Scion. I don't know if this has already been sourced/posted or not, but here it is. From another forum: http://*************/forums/f9/toyota...scion-usa-397/ I'm at a loss of words. I really can only see negative points for this car being badged as a Scion. The only upside would be if they decide to bring the price down like all other models in their lineup, but rumors seem to say otherwise. I guess we'll just have to wait patiently for more information. Sigh.

This still doesn't make sense to me no matter how much i read on.
While the rest of the world gets a Toyota FR-S, the US will have it branded Scion because why? Marketing Ploys? Large Gap/differences in the price range? Should there be a large difference in retail between an internationally sold FT86 vs a North american FT86? Is the US getting something more or less than the rest of the world is getting? If Scion follows its sales moto of not providing a car over 20k, does this mean that Scion FR-S offers less of a car now? Whats this BS about the North american models receiving a 2.5l boxter vs the proposed 2.0l? Scion FR-S gets a bump in displacement and will cost less than the Toyota badge version? MAKES NO SENSE! This badging is nonsense especially if the argument is MONEY, and MARKETING. I dunno there is something seriously fishy about this whole ordeal. I wonder if the ft86 production car they talk about is a variant and NOT the actual FT86 concept we have been following since its debut. With a Rumored Sedan and smaller brother FT also in the mix, if these were come into fruition were would they fit in the equation of Scion vs Toyota?

i still beleive that the GRMN concept is the one thats destined for scion and not the FT86... the source can only get it SO right.. and why would they announce production cars to the dealers meeting NOW if the car is to be released in OVER a year..
so many holes in this story.. why doesnt everyone just msg toyota with flames??
