I took your advice yesterday, and today...
Quote:
[ame]http://youtu.be/P5an13HIcTk[/ame] After discussing things with Wryann I realized that the only way to prove a difference was to dyno my modified header, then the unmodified header, and compare. Wryann agreed to work with me on the dyno costs, and I bought another header just like the one I modified. Then I can show some scientific proof of whether or not my modifications have done any good.

I personally own a 6 speed manual and every time i drive one of these automatics I'm impressed! Off stop the car feels great and picks up very well and I cant wait to see how the "real" dyno compares. As I said in the video a 3-5% increase is a big difference in a lesser powered car and very notable to the driver.

Look forward to the dyno. Either way it should be interesting to see the results.

Dyno stock, then the header, then the header with your mods.
All this does is show if it indeed has gains on the stock ecu. Then tune all of those setups individually then dyno them again.

Not asking for much, are you?
Here's most likely what I will do. Bring the stock header, unmodified header, and modified header to VIP's Dyno. Load the same 91 Octane EL Vishnu OFT tune fresh before testing each header. Compare the results. This should give me a rough idea of the effect of each header on performance, without tuning each individually, or waiting for ECU adaptation. I believe it's more important to compare each header under the same, exact circumstances, than it is to wait for ECU adaptation, and tune each for maximum performance. That would introduce a lot more variables. This would also be cheaper and quicker, giving results in the same day, rather than over the course of weeks. Maybe, after choosing a winner, I'll test other variables like intake and the rest of the exhaust. We'll see what Wryann has to say about doing all this testing and what it all costs. I'm not made of money, and I just bought another header to do this comparison. If you have another scientific, cost-effective way of comparing these, please chime in with your suggestions, because once I get the other header, I'm going to schedule dyno time right away. I'd be disappointed to miss out on a more scientific, verifiable, method of comparison, just because it didn't get to me in time.

The only way people get away with testing like this is when they're getting the tune spot on for each change and the ECU will have 0 learning to do. |

If my ECU could learn in only 15 miles, I'd be up for it. I would also like to know the answer to which makes the most, but all I can afford to find out is if there is any difference at all. Most of the people here are probably betting my modified header will test lower than the unmodified header, and THAT'S the what I'm paying for, which is better, not how much better it is. So, unless someone chimes in with a better, scientific, economical way of testing, that's what I'm going for.

Wryann from VIP Performance at least owns a daily-driven FRS, which he races. He's willing to give me a break on prices. I'm not sure if I'll have to take it home to swap headers though. Since I use an OpenFlash Tablet for tuning, I can switch between 5 stored tunes for each header, 6 if I reload the stock ROM, so that may be my new testing protocol. |
