Pretty sure that one of the hubcaps is still rolling if it didn't go into full earth orbit!
Me and a friend also bought a 70 chevelle for $200 that just needed the tires inflated and the battery charged. It had 13,000 original miles. He ended up putting a hole the size of a silver dollar through one of the pistons doing 120 from Palm Springs to Redlands...

I also had a guy selling a 71 442 down the street from me for $2500 in perfect shape, just needed a solenoid for the starter. I tried to talk my dad into lending me the money for it, but he said no cause the 455's were dogs...lol...

God, I don't think the server could handle it if I listed every car I could have got for peanuts but didn't!

1966 6 Cylinder Mustang, perfect original pony interior, fucked up right front fender, one owner, guy bamboozled my neighbor out of it for less than $2k. Would have been an easy resto-mod while keeping the original engine in the corner of the garage if Mustang originality ever became prized. Could likely get $10k for it in an instant today with just a spit shine, some maintenance and care, easily pocket $5k.

1968 Porsche 911 for $14k in #3 drivers condition with original everthing.
Hagerty currently claims a #4 condition car is worth $50k

Hey, I had a 78 'vette! (note the little "v")

It was silver, and a 4 speed. Only car I ever owned I DON'T miss.

Unless you're buying a rare option car or a 63 Coupe (split window), your return on investment will not outstrip inflation in 10 years. The bubble on non-collectable classics has burst.

Agh! Stake through my heart - about 13 years ago I bought a 1973 911S 2.4 MFI, matching numbers, original everything (including bucket 'sport' seats and rare factory rear wiper!). I think I paid $17K for it, enjoyed it, sold it 4 years later for $25K, huge mistake

My dad had a 66 912 in great original condition... he paid $2000 for it, he offered it to me for what he paid for it about a decade ago....

I turned him down

He sold it to a friend of his about a year later.

I had a Chevette. It was like my VW bugs and vans, when on the freeway you just had it floored and it ran at top speed, like maybe 70-75, maybe.

That car got SO thrashed, and jumped, and abused, drove it through a flood (had water coming through the doors) finally gave it up after I hit a turkey buzzard dead smack in the middle of the windshield. Almost crashed, and the buzzard in the back seat was eating skunk, it was just too much.

Gave the car to my brother and he rocked it for a few more years.

I had a Citation (slightly bigger Chevette)
It had no floor left in the trunk at all and got "retired" when the one door skin blew completely off going down the highway!

Right? Mine was solid as a rock. No surprises. Just did what it did. Gave it to a family friend when I went to boot camp. Came home on leave a year later to to find him driving it on 3 cylinders. Burned a valve and he never noticed. Zero mech aptitude.

Did a quickie valve job on it in the middle of winter and he drove it for a few more years.

Ah, those lovely Ontario winters. Chevettes were still RWD. So much fun doing donuts in the snow.

My mom had a Citation. <yawn> It too was a faithful little machine.

Candidate affordable collector car:

Alfa Romeo GTV6

Driver quality cars are currently in the $5k-$10k range with top examples going for $10k-$12k, supposedly fun to drive and arguably one of the most charismatic brands with what is likely the best sounding production V6 ever, definitely a candidate for replacing the Toyobaru in my book (along with 911 & RX-7). Definitely nowhere near as fast (unless you toss money at it) but I think the bottom of this car's value has passed (unless we see another big depression, no car is safe from that).

Edit: Seriously but something near the bottom of it's price curve if the market falls out you'll only be out a couple thousand instead of a couple tens of thousands.
