How many miles do you have on your 15? I haven't heard chirping yet, and I'm close to 2K miles. I only use Chevron 91 octane though.

It's not a problem, it's a feature. Getting your dealership to replace the fuel pump is a waste of time.

About 3000, but the chirping started at about 1K miles.

<My '15 has been doing it since about 250 miles. I'm at 8000+ now. Dealer told me it was because of the high pressure fuel pump. I told him it was not supposed to make that noise. But they were not willing to take it any further so that's why I have the extended warranty.

I understand you're not trolling now but I found it hard to believe a tune could suppress the crickets as I feel if it were that "simple" Toyota or any of the known tuners would've developed it already....

But just based on the datalogging and research I've done on our car so far (700 miles on the car... there's nothing wrong with the pump, lol) the noise is a result of the way the ECU is running the DI system. So you guys can stop changing pumps and screwing with lubricants and additives... (really, if the piston in the HPFP was rubbing you wouldn't be getting a chirp... it would grind and then possibly seize and you'd skip timing when the chain broke... ask me how I know... POS VW GTI).

As for the OEM's... I don't fail to see why they would think it's a problem as they actually appear to have programmed this behavior in... maybe they didn't intend on the noise, but 4MPa is ~580psi and I can't imagine the PRV would be silent trying to vent pressure through it with a 4MPa target.

Hell the MSF guys went 5 years and people put up with the issue until I pointed out the source and the solution... lol.

And this is why having engines full of electronics bug me at times, my solution would be a pump along the lines of the ones used in older diesels. I actually thought of the the noise being something to do with pressure relief back a while ago. And no, I'm not some stubborn older guy. I spent most of my 4 years of education dealing with all mechanical engines, they are so simple.

If you take some time to datalog the twins and use some basic troubleshooting (check off the fact that it's a brand new car with less than 1k miles so the likelihood for a mechanical problem/bad HPFP is basically NIL), start looking into the software and note how the system operates.

Anywhere from 650 rpm to ~1300 rpm I can hear the chirp, and when it's chirping the ECU is in a mode that's targeting 4 MPa of fuel pressure (fixed setting). If you touch the throttle just enough to leave that mode and enter the normal pressure target "mode" (the ECU appears to operate in two modes, one when you're on the throttle, one when you're not), even with the revs in that same range, no chirp. And you'll also note a difference in fuel pressure target and actual fuel pressure.

Doesn't take a rocket scientist to put together.

Unfortunately I have not yet found the perfect solution to keep the ECU from going into this mode. I'm an ECUTek dealer so I need to have a chat with those "chaps" across the pond about this. There is a table in the ECU that is 2x2 and targets 4.0MPa, but it seems to do nothing for our idle issue, it's never used (tried changing it up and down).

Another thing that would be interesting to see is if our PRV is straight mechanical or some kind of electronically controlled unit -- I seem to think electronically as we have a huge range of fuel pressure operation (all the way to 20mpa, ~2900psi. Almost 2x higher than the MS3 platform). Just the way everything behaves leads me to believe it is electronic... but I haven't had the time to look yet.

One thing I've noticed, is that my car is hot idling for a long time (inbetween autocross runs for a heat if I don't shut the car down between runs), my idle fuel trims climb easily into the +teens. After I leave the event and get some normal running on the car the fuel trims reduce back to where they normally are (<5). Seems that extended idling/chirping is doing something that is causing the injectors to have to increase duty cycle to meet AFR's.

Anyone else notice this?
