The car is already unhappy on 91/92 octane from the factory. What race gas does for you is buy you headroom in case you overheat or get a hot spot in your cylinder; 100 octane has anti-knock additives and is more knock resistant in general, as well as having a lower flame front speed. Pump/Street gas, on the other hand, is made to keep your engine clean and be as cheap as possible while maintaining the octane rating.

While we don't run pure 100 octane, we do put in a few gallons per tank when tracking, as the car is noticeably faster and smoother. You can have VP100/101 5 gallon containers shipped to your home, and it will easily fit in the back seat of your car. It's approximately the same size as a 5gal water bottle, and comes fully sealed.

Most guys that track already put in a gallon or two of 100 as a precaution anyways, and most people transport their own high octane or E85.
I am a bit skeptical about running pure 100 octane also or get tuned for it since I believe the Ecu and motor may adopt the new gas and may cause issues down the road but using a few gallons (or maybe less) as a safety measure make sense to me too .. or having a more conservative tune for track days

maybe running race gas and race octane tune was the root cause of this failure

The 997 GT3 RS 4.0 has 12.6:1
The 981 Cayman/Boxster (all 3 engines) has 12.5:1
The R8 (all 3 engines) has 12.5:1
The Lamborghini Aventador has 11.8:1
The Lamborghini Huracan has 12.7:1
The 918 Spyder has 13.5:1, as does the LaFerrari (though now we're getting into silly expensive territory)

If you look at motorcycles, it's even easier to find examples:
The BMW S1000RR has 13.0:1
The Ducati 1199 Panigale has 12.5:1
The Suzuki Hayabusa has 12.5:1
The Yamaha R1 has 12.7:1

Admittedly, these are all substantially more expensive and exotic than the BRZ (or are motorcycle engines), but it isn't as outlandish of an engine design as you're implying. I know a lot of 981/991 owners who happily track their cars on 91 octane, and I haven't heard of any problems related to it.
NONE of those engines have long lifespans, minus the S65.

I've personally witnessed 3 991 GT3 failures on track already, and these are post-recall engines.

How'd you like the 5 mile?

Fun and challenging! Can't wait until spring to come back (it's an 11 hour drive from Seattle so am limited to the number of times I can make it, but it is worth it)
