Unfortunately I am parked outside right now.

When I say a bit hard I mean it takes more effort than on a nice 15 degree day. So far it has never refused 2nd gear and has never been a problem so far. I had my old e30 in Nelson BC for a week of -20 weather and it was a similar situation but never refused 2nd gear. I don't think it will be a problem as long as the car warms up for a couple minutes.

The first time I got the refusal was on the snow day in September (it was close to the freezing temp that morning). It had a blocking type feeling like the syncros seeing a big mismatch in rpms. I didnt force it and went to third.
It did let me get into the 2nd at the next stop sign ( about 1.5 k away) but it was a bit notchier than normal. The effect something that i cannot reproduce at will.

I typically wait for the first 30secs for the engine to get out of the open loop exhaust and then go.

I have also noticed that it seems to help if I go go through the motions of engaging 1st then 2nd and back to neutral a couple of times as the car started and is stationary. Probably a pre workout massage ? lol.

As the gods of fate would have it. I got an assignment out of the city for a month and ended up cancelling the appt. at Calgary Subaru.

I will do the fluid swap to Motul and store for the winter and deal with it next year. I really appreciate all your input guys/gals!

My '14 doesn't like to go into second gear either.

Hey, has anyone had Opti-Coat done on their cars? (http://www.opti-coat.com)
I just had mine done over the weekend. The coating is supposed to cause water to bead off the car and dirt won't stick as easily.
I'm not supposed to wash the car for a few more days yet, but I'll let you guys know how the water beading thing is after I give it the first wash!

What's your experience with it? Does it work as advertised?

I wonder if the 2nd gear issue you all speak of is in the newr 2014 model, as I have had my 2013 for 3 years now, and drove it every winter with no issues.
I have also taken it to Calgary Subaru for all warranty work and rgardless of how I felt the service was/is, my car always got fixed....as it should.....especially warranty stuff! If it didn't, I would be speaking to managment as that is just crazy. If you have other issues like oil changes etc, then by all means, take it anywhere, but new cars are potected by warranties, you pay for it, so use the dealer and get things fixed.
And for anyone that is going to store thier car.....you are sadly missing out at how awesome these cars are, I can't wait for the snow to start flying.....minus the cold temperatures of course!

I am storing my car. It's not the snow I care about, it's the salt and sand that inevitably follow. Plus it helps that I already have a beater with winter tires.

It's the stone chips + the additional winter tires that made the decision for me to store the car. I already have a spider on my windshield which I got in June. Plus I have a beater on studded tires that I take to the ski in banff regularly.
I think the city should reconsider it's practice of using stone chips which are my biggest annoyance for driving in the winter.

I think it is only with the 2014s and maybe we also havent worn down the fluid enough yet as to mileage. As brzzzzz and myself have the identical cars and both of ours dont like to shift into second gear at cold temps (mine has been doing it at -15 and colder)

Every car is different, just like the chirp.. Some get it with shell 91 and other with petro 94, same with the 2nd gear grind, I had it from day 1, anything below 5degrees and it was hard go to into 2nd .. After motul no problems yet, yesterday car was covered in frost and 2nd was like butter.
