This is definitely true. I remember talking to a recruiter once who mentioned having a candidate in his 30s get rejected at the last minute because the background check found showed an arrest from a bar fight he had gotten into when he was 19. Also, there are many countries which will deny you entry if you've been convicted of a felony anywhere.

No particular style. Just brawling I guess?

Very true and if the DA finds that you have any type of formal fight training, you're in a bad spot legally. They will consider you a "trained professional" and misdemeanor charges can quickly elevate to felony charges. When the Marines instituted their Martial Arts Program, the very first warning you got at the beginning of each training module was "don't go out in town, get drunk and decide to use your new found skills on Bubba at the bar cause if you do you will a) be in jail for a long time and b) no longer be a Marine". End story.

Although I respect martial arts, I have never been in a fight or seen a need to fight. There is usually another way out, or don't put yourself in the situation in the first place.

I see Martial Arts as more of a form of exercise and discipline.

Including Canada!
In fact they can and do deny entry for things such as DUI so a conviction for assault is almost a guaranteed denial.

I have been on a steady diet of chili since Friday! The wife made way too much.
At this point my butt should be registered as a lethal weapon!

Been in a few, mostly in Europe when I was studying abroad and had to look out for my group. I'm not a fan of fighting at all, but being 6'2" 235lbs means I'm the guy people look to for help/backup, but it also means that in some cases I can generate enough power to seriously injure someone, and I'm not about that.

I do have a firm code when it comes to me fighting:

1) Never throw first, because words, body language, or just plain leaving are often the best deterrent. (But never turn your back on an advancing aggressor.)

2) I'll always give the other guy one free swing and either slip it or just eat it. I do this because people are often all too willing to throw one punch, but their resolve gets shaken when you stand there waiting for the second. Also, bystanders are much inclined to back up your story when you make it clear that you were not the instigator. (Probably testing my luck on this one, but it hasn't gone south yet.)

3) Handle your business quickly and efficiently. The outcome doesn't matter as long as you keep your brothers and sisters safe. A busted lip is a small price to pay to see that happen.

4) Never strike to the face unless absolutely necessary. A buddy lost a finger from an infected "fight bite."

5) Dip out as soon as possible, preferably before the fight even occurs.

Training: Traditional Boxing up through high school.

P.S. Throwing out the Forest Whitaker crazy eye, really does stop people in their tracks. haha

I've been in a few scraps. I've won a few and have received an ass kicking. I just try to stay out of those situations now that I'm older.

This is true. I got into a street fight once as an adult a few years ago. I had had training in Muay Thai for some time but never jitjitsu, which I turned around and enrolled in right after this event.

I was crossing main street around noon with two friends. A guy and his wife, both very very obese and yelling at each other were turning right onto the street while we were in the middle of the road still crossing, so we just continued crossing. Fat man and ugly wife proceed to honk horn and yell at us for being in the street taking up their precious time. I don't think anything of it, but my two friends both yell F**k you and flip the bird at them. This is where it gets flippin crazy...

Fat man revs the shit outta his nissan altima engine (laughing so hard inside) but then proceeds to squeal the tires and turn in the car like he is going to RUN ME OVER as I'm standing on the side of the road (still in the road but just slightly) and all while there is gobs of room on the road for him to go around. I just stand there thinking "what is this Ahole doing?" So he backs up a bit to go around me, still yelling explicates.

As he goes by I smack the car to let him know he's way too close. So dude pulls forward and gets outta his car (holy shit he's like 6'4" and 350lbs easy). My friends back away, I walk back behind the car and threw my hands up like WTF are you doing?! He grabs me and starts literally throwing KNEES! I've been in this situation in sparring many times and knew how to handle it. Not a single knee landed and I was elbowing the shit outta his thighs but couldn't get out of his head lock as he had me between his bountiful manboobs, which also didn't smell too bad. He must have just done laundry with some scented detergent.

So he figures he isn't hurting me with the silly knees, he's getting super tired, and I'm hurting him so he twists while still keeping me in a head lock and throws me on the ground and jumps on me. I quickly kept my arms out from under him and as he is throwing punches down I'm easily blocking them with my forearms. I tried to hip check him off a couple times but just couldn't get him so I grabbed his shirt and was literally about to start choking him with it when my buddy gets his balls back and comes around the side and cracks him one in the face knocking him off of me.

At this point he changes his tune and his wife has been yelling at him and us, and he says "We're leaving", I retort "No you're not!"

Well I'll be. I try to grab his ass to continue the fight (wasn't thinking clearly, I had obviously just had my ass kicked). He shouldered rolled into my body so hard I was thrown onto the pavement a second time. This dude was MASSIVE. He gets in car and rolls away.... all I could think for days was damn, I got my ass kicked.

But the moral of the story is, training kept me from getting hurt. It gave me absolutely no physical advantage. In the real world, people who are less physically fit, or so much as close to an even match for you are not going to mess with you. You are probably only going to ever deal with people willing to street fight you who are much bigger or they wouldn't have the confidence required. I am an exception though because I literally have no fear (some people call it common sense).

So go get real training and don't start fights. Also, if its a group don't be afraid to run, and run fast. People in groups do really heinous things because of mob mentality.

Some people say whoever throwing the first strike has an absolute advantage. Because the first person knows when the attack is starting, has thought of the other person's reaction and a counter attack.... while the other person is busy reacting to the first punch.
