WeatherTech ClearCover License Plate Frame

Are they worth it? I like the look of 'em but one frame is almost $40 shipped. I'm thinking either the red/black or brushed stainless/black. The red/black would go better with the car right now but the brushed stainless/black would go with whatever I might replace it with down the line (at $40 I'd like to keep the frame when I finally sell the car).

Worth it? Thats up to you. Why do you need this? Cosmetics? Dont want your plate scratched? Looks like some simple screws and a plastic cover, so it cannot be for security.

Buying direct is expensive. Go to walmart, autozone etc and get a cover for a lot less. Or check amazon if you are a hermit

Why do people feel the need to be so pedantic on the internet? When someone is asking if a product is worth the price is can generally be safely assumed that they mean, "Does the price of the product represent the quality of the product?"

Wal-Mart and AutoZone don't carry the WeatherTech ClearCover. Amazon has a few of them but neither of the colors I'm looking for.

The flip side of this argument is always more animated....here let me show you.

-No, don't waste your $40 on a piece of plastic with some color on it for your damn license plate. Go to walmart and buy one for $8, or better yet, who cares? its just a license plate

-Woah buddy, this is a quality piece, made in the USA. Well worth it.

Its a lose-lose.

I wouldnt buy it, why does my license need a condom? Who cares? If anything I want a tinted one so it blends in with the car better.

In a lot of states a license plate cover of any type is illegal. You might want to check with your state and local laws.

In my opinion, in response to your question of "is it worth it", no.

Why not?
Again, in my opinion I feel the price is insane. I always prefer buying a better product rather than buy 2-3 lesser ones. However, unless you're hitting things I don't see how the cheap Wal-Mart one will do the job any different. You could buy 5 cheap ones for the price of the expensive ones.
Yet again, in my opinion, the coloured bars are super tacky.

I don't get it. Why would a license plate need to be protected by a $40 cover?

In all my years, with several cars and having had several interstate moves that necessitated new license plates, I have only had one of those plates damaged. It was in 1988, when the guy behind me at the turn in an Arby's drive thru smacked the corner of his bumper right into my license plate and bent it. If I had had this $40 cover on it, the license plate still would have bent, but I also would have had a smashed $40 cover on it as well.

So even considering potential damage to the license plate, I still don't get it. People will buy anything.

I have one, and I like it. At the price it's not for everyone, but it keeps your plate clean and protected from the elements. I doesn't interfer with a registration sticker either. It's a well built piece of kit. Weathertech makes some pretty robust stuff but they are a bit more expensive than the others. I have the mat liners and the trunk liner as well. I keep both in year-round.

I have never had a license plate damaged by elements. I'm not sure I've even seen one damaged by elements, except maybe the rusty 1920 license plate my grandfather had nailed to a beam in his shop. The current ones are virtually indestructible. And now instead of washing your license plate, you wash your license plate cover.

So I still just don't get it.

Well, $40 for a plastic frame is a bit much IMHO...

Also, modern license plates are shit. Well, at least the Texas ones. They're a big sticker over a metal plate...yes they're really that cheap now.

I have one for my front plate and I feel that it's worth the price. The plate on my previous car was at least 10 years old and pretty trashed. I wanted to keep my new plate looking nice. It is very high quality, and a gasket keeps moisture out. I recommend one if you are running a front plate.

I went frameless, placing lots of 'sponge' behind so the plate doesn't scratch the paint. It cost about $4 and it looks great. I'll post pics if you want.
