You need a pump to pump oil from the transmission through a cooler and back into the gearbox. We use a Tilton pump and they run about $250 retail and by the time you're done you'll have about $500 in parts total and a healthy amount of labor and some minor fab to get a good transmission cooler setup.

Seems like the TKO has some shifting issues and is only rated for 6800 rpm. That's a far cry from 9k rpm we run up to with the Element motors. Probably worth talking to Don about the RPM he runs and or if he sells a kit without the transmission as there are some companies that build the TKOs to handle more rpm and shift better.

I've got a communication in with someone I knew that ran a TKO in a car running 8K RPM to see his experiences. From what I remember he had zero issues. |

I know of many tko's and t56/t6060's that don't like shifting over 7000rpm. You can modify them to shift at higher rpm but it requires you to faceplate the gearset, then it's not a really street friendly.

In other news...it seems like 4th gear is the culprit in these transmission shearings.

He got back to me...
"Had nothing but trouble shifting that Bitch Poo... 3rd set of synchro's and I was done.. "I'm asking if he knows any other options besides the V160 since he's been building crazy cars since before I was born. EDIT: His reply "The newer TKO/Tremec line got much better Synchros " I'm taking that to assume Tremec knew they had an issue and have fixed it... Honestly I'd be contacting Tremec directly. Argh! Yeah based on what I had read for reviews it seemed like shifting at high rpm was questionable for many. This is why I was thinking of buying a Tremec that was worked over and getting a fitting kit from Don.
Maybe just pony up the $10k for the Hollinger sequential? Has anyone jumped on that and tested it to be the cat's meow? I'm nervous because one of the teams I race with picked up a $30k sequential for the STi and it broke at the same power level as OEM. In any event guys I do think a transmission cooler will help the box handle more torque. Seems a little silly for a street car but definitely seemed to give me an edge on the track. |

I have been talking to Tremec and a few other shops/specialists with regards to roadracing a Tremec for over a year...
Bottom line, if you want to use a Tremec, the only one that makes sense is the Magnum. And even then, you are very close to the upper rpm band here they like to shift. Stock rpm is doable, 9k - not so much. Dedicated dogbox is nice, but they require an infnite amount more servicing. I wouldnt even mind the unfriendliness on the street so much, but the service interval reminds me of a top end job in a shifter kart. Im personally looking at the Magnum, even if I have to mangle the tunnel. David |

A "dog" box is not the same as a "sequential. " Something like a PPG dog box or even a syncro (dog is just the engagement type) set don't really require any extra maintenance. For easier daily driving with dog engagement you just double clutch your upshifts and its not a "crash" box then. A sequential can require more maintenance but most likely that's a scheduled "race" maintenance. I'm sure using your clutch when not racing would lengthen service intervals immensely. |
