I just got my steering wheel replaced under warranty. I have a late model 2013 and a lot of highway miles. It started peeling in two places so I finally brought it in. Took a damn while because the dealer wanted corporate to take a look at it. Corporate was out on some training so they didn't get back to me for another week, AND I had to bring the car in again. Anyway, corporate field rep authorized the replacement.
The new wheel appears to be a different material. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a part change, as the new wheel seems to be made out of a much harder, plasticier material. It doesn't have that soft touch, pseudo leather feel anymore. It's just hard plastic. ...I miss my Nardi. =( |

I'm on my second wheel and it is showing discolor, maybe I need a newer wheel like said before. I'll ask for the part number of the wheel mine has now or if any updates have been made.

I work for a dealer who shall not be named, and this is a problem on several different brands. I don't work for Subaru or Toyota, but I do know what causes this problem, but if I put it out for all to read then I too will look like a dealership ass hole.

I took it in to get other warranty stuff and then got the car back and the steering wheel was worse than when I dropped it off...

Basically he's saying it's normal wear and tear even though it should last longer than 10k miles...

Ok, this is bullshit. This is NOT normal wear & tear. It's shitty chemistry. I've been driving mine for 6 months and the wheel has always been sticky - like the epoxy never quite cured.
Last week it finally started peeling. Don't fucking tell me I have to replace my steering wheel more often than my tires. The steering wheel on my wife's '03 Camry is in perfect condition.

Just had my wheel replaced about a month ago as well. 86xx miles, no rings, no cleaners. Fortunately my dealership is really cool and replaced it, no questions asked. To claim that this is normal wear is flat out insulting. I bought a '00 Celica brand new for less money, proceeded to drive the shit out of it and never had steering wheel wear. Bottom line is that it's cheaply built. I also noticed that my replacement wheel is decidedly more gray than the original one. Interesting.

15k miles and I just had mine replaced last week - dealership didn't complain at all.
For what it's worth - mine started pealing on a hot day in the middle of the summer. Inside of the car started baking and I noticed the steering wheel start to bubble. It might not be the cause of all of the steering wheel issues, but heat definitely started mine. |
