Been Acquiring pieces for my car.

Hey all,
I've been acquiring aftermarket goodies to throw at my car when I pick it up early december. One of the things I purchased recently (As a note, I live in Commiefornia, so I have to abide by C.A.R.B.'s strict ass standards) a rather expensive CARB approved Innovate Stage 2 Supercharger kit (the one with the intercooler) and an AEM water injection kit (my smog guy never has pointed out water injection during inspection on my prior cars so it's worth a shot, especially since I haven't heard anything about water injection kits).
With a Moto-East tune I'll throw a guess out there I'll make 280 horsepower.

Now here's my stupid question:
Will i need to beef up the internals? Or will the stock internals handle this for the most part? I won't be driving this vehicle more than 3k miles a year nor will it be my DD vehicle.

My even dumber question for you: why collect parts for a car you have yet to own?

What if your car was a lemon and you end up with parts on a large expensive rolling paperweight?

That is a pretty dumb question.


Lemons are covered under lemon law. Its not a bad idea.


OP, I would advise you to leave it stock for abit as you understand the car's limits and enjoy it NA.

Yes, I am aware of how lemon laws work... but the question is involving the internals and the context of the question.

You answered what I was hinting at, namely the fact that OP is asking about reliability of engine internals on boosted components before owning the car. It's a dumb question but something I always wonder about, when people want to mod the car but question the reliability of the car at the same time.

I did the exact same thing two years ago. Waited 8 months for the car, and when it arrived I already had amassed aftermarket wheels and tires, an armrest, new fluids, Coilovers, MC brace, LEDs, sharkfin, and brake lines and pads. People thought I was nuts. Most of those parts are still on the car, along with loads of others.
There's nothing wrong with preplanning.
As per engine reliability, I've had mine boosted @8psi with ~265whp for the last 15k miles. No issues. I'd break the engine in NA (first 1000 miles).

Thank you for the info. To be safe you think I should just wait a year and be happy with it NA for now? I'd be totally fine with it personally. I don't think I'll be hitting as much power as you though, more than likely I'll be sticking with the standard 75mm pulley. Its just an autocross/weekend play car. I was honestly just worried reliability wise because imagine how awkward it'd be to be that guy who wasn't sure if he should have upgraded the internals and ended up destroying the engine early on. Thanks for the info. If the car is a lemon its covered under the lemon laws hence more so why I should probably wait a year before tampering with the engine.

Nothing wrong, yes... but:

your mods were mostly suspension and cosmetic. The question was regarding internal for boosted use.

If you aren't sure, you need to understand how warranty laws work before you get into modifying your car.

Lemon law covers a lemon law condition, whereas normal warranty (let's say your engine blows up) is not a lemon law condition. Lemon law is designed to prevent users from getting the run-around on warranty fixes they are due, but if the problem is diagnosed and can be properly fixed with the first visit, you won't use a lemon law to cover your car.

My point is, why are you asking to beef up your internals? This is something you need to figure out for your kit + your tune with the engine builder or tuner... The internals can handle over 300RWHP, but a lot of it is dependent on the tune.

I can find properly-built 400RWHP cars as often as I can find blown-up 200RWHP stock boost stock internal (factory) turbo engines that have a poor tune.

Who is tuning? Who is putting the parts on? Those will answer your first question more than any other response you will get.

Edit: I should add, you're smog-exempt for 6 years. If you're planning on keeping the car for 6 years, no problem... but why are you stuck on CARB-exemption?

changing things you dont even know you dont like (or worse, like) is pretty irrational if you ask me. a car in your garage without a supercharger is more useful/fun than a supercharger without a car.

On this forum alone one could spend days and days doing research on aftermarket parts. Im so glad that we have such a great forum with what it seems like an infinite amount of information on almost every topic concerning the gt86. I don't know what was going through op's head when he decided to drop a large amount of bread on aftermarket parts for a car he doesn't even own. What if you drive the car and end up not liking it for one reason or the next or maybe you drive it and are satisfied with the power it brings? Really scared for the future of mankind.

Big difference though on a new car... Especially since you were an early adopter. You dont know what issues the engine/car will have since its a new platform, Modifications will void your warranty and if you encounter any major recalls in the future regarding the engine or anything your fucked. I personally would wait to modify my car atleast until most of the warranty has been used up and or put alot of miles on it already and you feel confident the car doesnt have any issues from the factory.

Sticking to bolt ons that wouldnt affect the warranty too much or anything that you can take off easily when you gotta take it in for service. He wants to upgrade internals too so that will be a major upgrade if he does do that and any problems occur due to warranty
