Interesting - if that's the case, it makes me wonder what the 918 would do on stickier tires (it comes from the factory with Cup 2s)

Yep. It's basically a 100lb weight loss package for $84k or so, including a rather surprising 33 pounds of weight loss just from the wheels (which could make a significant difference - that's a lot of rotating mass to lose).

I actually thought the 918 would be faster. For close to a million dollars I'd expect more, but then again it's the fattest of the hyper cars. LaFerrari and P1 would be sub 2:40.

What you mean, 165 at turn in? You can't take turn 1 over 60 mph no matter what you're driving

Sorry I meant the kink on the main straight, I don't know why I said turn 1.

Yeah it's also the version that lapped the Nurb in 6:57.

Yep. I'm still disappointed that McLaren and Ferrari won't run their cars and show their laptimes. The 918 lap is quite a thing to watch though.

The C7 was a Z51 and the time was very impressive considering it rides on fairly narrow PSS's.

I'm surprised however that no one has mentioned that this car also blew it's motor during the event. Additionally, the C&D long term test car also had a motor let go. Just to add fuel, I witnessed another C7 pop last month at Roebling driven by a 70 year old at snail pace.

We had our Hennessey HPE600 C7 pop the engine at 70km on the odometer, all failures so far seem to be rod bearings.

The LS7 is definitely not a bullet proof motor as it comes. The weak points seem to be the sodium filled valves and the rocker arms. Replace those, run the larger dry sump tank, and you have a pretty solid motor. I have also seen a stock C6 Z06 blow it's motor at Road Atlanta.

The latest issue and the one that I am referencing is with the new LT1 motor and it appears to be due to a bearing design.

LS7's were notorious for dropping exhaust valves up till 2011. The valve guides would come out of spec due to faulty fabrication of the heads. There have been nearly zero issues with newer LS7's however most have not yet reached the typical mileage point where failures were occuring. (Just after warranty expires)

I had Z28 on the brain from the thread title, haha. Sucks to hear the new LT1s are having issues. I was doing an oil change with a buddy the day before we were heading to Road Atlanta for an HPDE weekend when we found the dreaded needles from a rocker needle bearing in the oil from his LS7. Luckily we were able to buy one off a guy on the way to Road Atlanta and swapped it out in the parking lot of the hotel the night before.

Ha you remind me of a friend of mine we have nicknamed McGuyver. He can fix anything anywhere with parts bought at 7-11

Most of the Corvette engine problems have been identified as a defect with the oil filter. Some apparently were delivered with metal shavings in the filter. This can lead to bearing failure.

So it's not even an engine problem per say. It's already been taken care of and if I was in the market for a $60k sports car I wouldn't give this issue much thought.
