Latest splurge: Aberlour 12

Kind of disappointed, 40% ABV tastes way too watered down. Fantastic nose, but weak when it hits your tongue Will give it another chance though, maybe my tongue just isn't sensitive today.

I don't like the alcohol burn most of the time and it's a good contrast to the liquor.

Recently picked up a Highland Park Dark Origins and an Ardbeg Corryvreckan. Both delicious. I don't like the opaque bottle on the Dark Origins though, since now I won't be able to tell when I'm about to run out...

I'm dying to try Dark Origins but I don't really want to drop over $80 on something I've never had before. How does it compare to standard HP 12 year?

Corryvreckan is a solid Islay whisky. I was going to buy some last week but I went with the Bowmore 15 'Darkest'. If you haven't tried Bowmore 15 I highly recommend it!

As I am nearing 21, I would like to understand what it means when they say the "body" the "nose" the "palet" and the "finish" of the scotch. Anyone care to describe how those come to be? I'm curious to know

It's over $80 in your area? It was only $60ish for me...

As for how it compares to regular HP? A lot of the similar notes come through, but it's noticeably darker and richer, with somewhat of a chocolatiness, and you can really notice the extra sherry. It finishes nicely too, with a bit of peat and smoke (I think a bit more than the regular 12, but I'm out of 12 at the moment, so I can't compare side by side). I'd definitely recommend it.

I do love the HP12 too - that's sort of my go-to scotch, since it's so cheap around here (I usually pay around $35 for a bottle).

I haven't tried the Bowmore - I'll have to put that on my list. The local liquor store also has some of the Uigeadail, which I really want to try sometime as well.

Damn, $35 for HP12 is a great deal! It's usually around $45/bottle in the Bay Area and the local BevMo wants $87 for Dark Origins! Sheesh

Body tends to be the overall mouth feel. Does it feel heavy? Is it lighter? Is it kind of fumey or does it go down smooth? Any ethyl alcohol burn when it goes down?
Nose is pretty self explanitory
Palate to me is the opening notes at first sip. What do you taste as soon as it enters the mouth? It's definitely good to wait a couple of seconds from the time you take the sip before you swallow it. You may get something new out of it with each sip.
The finish is how the scotch will taste the moment you gulp it down and what taste you are left with right after you swallow it. The finish is usually drastically different than the opeing notes. Many scotches will leave a lingering taste in the mouth even several minutes after drinking them. Some Scotch Whisky like Ardbeg from Islay will even have a slight numbing sensation in the mouth.

Scotch is a wonderful thing. I used to hate it when I was younger and now it's pretty much the only hard stuff I'll touch

I also hear the best way to try your first real drink of scotch (or whiskey? Idk) is neat.

How do you guys drink yours?

I've come across this before; there's scotch, then whiskey, then scotch whiskey? What's the difference? Sorry for the dumb questions just curious about my new fangled legal drinking abilities lol

From my local bevMo, I get the feeling they way over charge their stuff.

I take mine neat all the way! I might add a drop or two of water but that's it. Definitely no ice.
